THE TRADE DEADLINE LIVE BLOG

It’s that time of year again! That time when the Oilers sell off actual human beings for wishes and magic beans. How many beans are coming our way? We’ll be staring at Twitter with calculators in hand to find out those answers. Jeanshorts  and I will keep this thing updated throughout the day with everything that happens for the Oilers and around the NHL. This is the OilersNation trade deadline live blog!
Last year’s trade deadline happened to be my first day of working at OilersNation full time. Last year, we said goodbye to longtime Oiler, Ales Hemsky. This year, Jeff Petry is the one that’s leaving town. Frankly, the fact that the Oilers are in a sellers position at the deadline yet again is infinitely disappointing – I thought we were supposed to be past trading veterans for wishes? *laughs maniacally* First Perron (for Klinkhammer, I know) got moved, and Petry was the next in line.
To me, trading guys like Perron and Petry seems like a step backwards. Are we on our way out of this rebuild, or are we starting this thing over again (the latter seems to be true)? Is Klinkhammer a useful hockey player? Absolutely, but he’s not David Perron. Is Petry a number one? No, he’s not, but he’s a solid hockey player with some experience that the Oilers won’t have passed today. Sure, maybe the picks that came for him might pan out, but when? Five years from now? Seems like we’re going in the wrong direction here.
I don’t expect the Oilers to be very busy today, but we’re going to be staring at Twitter all day just to be sure.

THE POSSIBLE SUSPECTS…

Petry:
As we’ve been talking about for weeks, it seems like Jeff Petry was only a few draft picks away from leaving town. Personally, I think moving a guy like Petry is ridiculous, but what other options are there? When MacT signed Petry to a one-year deal, last summer, it all but guaranteed the result that happened this morning. Is Petry the anchor on the backend that the Oilers have been looking for for so long? Of course not, but the Oilers had to use him like he was that guy. Playing Jeff Petry above his weight class was the Oilers fault, not his. Anyway… the Oilers have traded Jeff Petry to Montreal for a second and third round (only if the Habs win two playoff series) pick in 2015.
Ference:
Yesterday morning, Darren Dreger tried his best to break the Oilogosphere when he reported that teams were asking the Oilers what it would take to get Andrew Ference. Mentioning the captain’s name in trade rumour was a surprise since we hadn’t heard anything prior. Ference carries a heavy contract for a player of his skill set and also holds a no move clause.
Draft Picks:
As it stands right now, the Oilers have two first round picks to play with (well… one actually, they’re not touching our scratch ticket) that might be useful in packaging for better players. Personally, I think any trade using draft picks will likely get made at the draft, but who knows – this is the Oilers we’re talking about.
Anyone else?
I don’t think we’re going to see a big trade from the Oilers, but you never know. As for the UFAs, you have guys like Viktor Fasth, Richard Bachman, and Steve Pinizzotto representing what’s left for the Oilers. Maybe Fasth could have been moved (big maybe) had he been healthy, but that’s not an option so I imagine they’ll lose him for nothing in the summer.

THE UPDATES…

I will be updating this thread as the day goes on (if anything happens) so keep your eyes on the Nation for your updates…
  • 7:10am – Jeff Petry to Montreal for a second round pick and a conditional fifth round pick (if the Habs can win two rounds this pick turns into a third).
  • 9:20(ish)am – Ryan Rishaug says that he thinks the Oilers are done for the day on the Nielson and Fraser Show
  • 10:38am – I’m going to need more coffee. This is going to be a long day…
  • 11:35am – I’m starting to think the Oilers aren’t going to do anything fun. The MacT presser will be on around 1:30pm, so I’ll live tweet that. Hopefully that will be entertaining, at least.
  • 12:58pm – Looks like the Oilers are done, pending a deal that comes in after the deadline… Underwhelming day for the Oilers even though I wasn’t expecting much from them in the first place.
