Throwback Thursday: This week in 2000, Edmonton Oilers trade Bill Guerin

This week in 2000 (Nov. 10), the Edmonton Oilers traded Bill Guerin to the Boston Bruins. The Oilers acquired Anson Carter, a 2001 2nd round pick used to draft Doug Lynch, as well as a swapped first-round pick Edmonton used to select Ales Hemsky in 2001.

While Guerin was nothing short of a star in Edmonton scoring 79 goals and 161 points in 211 games, the Oilers did well in the trade. Carter spent parts of three seasons in Edmonton scoring 157 points in 211 games, while Doug Lynch was later included in the trade that brought Chris Pronger to Edmonton for the 2005-06 Cup run.

Hemsky, meanwhile, spent 11 incredible years in Edmonton and was a face of the franchise through that time. In 652 games, Hemsky scored 142 goals and 477 points for the Oilers and scored six goals and 17 points in 24 games during the 05-06 playoffs.

While losing Guerin, who went on to play another 10 years, was a tough pill to swallow, Edmonton did well in their return and got lots of assets that helped make the club better.
