UPDATE: Anton Forsberg is on waivers again

You can have your goalie back, but it’s going to cost you.

According to Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston, the Carolina Hurricanes are shopping goaltender Anton Forsberg. This comes just a couple of days after the team claimed him off of waivers from the Edmonton Oilers.

As Johnston says, Forsberg has remained in Canada since being claimed by Carolina and hasn’t yet left the country to report to the team. That means that if the Oilers were to re-acquire him, he wouldn’t have to do a 14-day quarantine.

This tactic pretty clearly seems like Hurricanes’ general manager Don Waddell trying to scrape a draft pick or something off of Ken Holland by putting him in a difficult situation.

Edmonton now has Stuart Skinner, a prospect with no NHL experience, as the team’s third-string goalie. By the time the AHL begins, the team would obviously like for Skinner to be playing with the Condors rather than sitting on the Taxi Squad. Adding another veteran goalie via free agency could also be a bit of a challenge for the Oilers right now if the player isn’t already in the country.

On the other hand, though, the Hurricanes will have to keep Forsberg on their active roster while they’re “shopping” him. If they try to send him to the Taxi Squad, the Oilers could simply grab him back for nothing.

Well, so much for that plan. Forsberg has been placed on waivers again…

It’s pretty reasonable to assume Forsberg will be an Oiler again by tomorrow afternoon.
