WATCH: Evan Bouchard and Raphael Lavoie both score for Allsvenskan clubs

Wednesday was a big day for young Oilers playing across the pond.

Evan Bouchard picked up a goal in Södertälje’s commanding victory over Karlskoga, while Raphael Lavoie also added a couple of goals as Väsby lost to William Lagesson’s team, Vita Hästen.

Here’s Bouchard’s goal, which was his third of the season. It came on the power-play, in which Bouchard gets the puck at the blueline, drags it towards the centre of the zone, and then goes a give-and-go with Ludwig Blomstrand before smashing a one-timer through the screened goalie.

I was able to tune in for a little bit of this game and while it’s difficult to get a great perspective on a choppy stream with Swedish commentary, here’s what I noticed…

Bouchard plays on the team’s top-pairing alongside Alexander Falk, a veteran defenceman with five years of SHL experience. The pair is used in both offensive and defensive zone situations with Bouchard being a key part of the Södertälje power play, manning the point and moving around for a big one-timer.

Though you might think that Bouchard’s so-so speed would be a bit of a detriment on the big, European rink, his style actually caters to it nicely. Bouchard’s passing is ridiculously good and he capitalizes on how much open room there is to work with by hitting his teammates with tape-to-tape breakout passes. It’s the same story in the offensive zone, where Bouchard moves the puck very effectively from the point.

Bouchard now has three goals and five points through nine games, making him the team’s leader offensively among defencemen.

And here’s both of Lavoie’s goals. The first one comes off of the rush as Lavoie takes a pass on his backhand and quickly roofs a shot and the second one comes right off of the draw as Lavoie snipes a shot from the face-off circle. Both goals nicely show off Lavoie’s ridiculously quick and accurate shooting ability.

I wasn’t able to find a stream for Lavoie and Lagesson’s game so I won’t offer any other comments. Lavoie is now up to four goals and six points through seven games played, making him the leader in points on Väsby.
