The kids in Bakersfield are starting to find their groove.
The Condors hosted the San Diego Gulls, the affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks, on Wednesday evening and put together a dominant 5-1 win. Rookie forward Carter Savoie, Edmonton’s fourth-round pick from the 2020 draft, led the way with three goals, bumping his total up to eight on the season.
Savoie, who was playing on a line with veteran Brad Malone and 2021 first-round pick Xavier Bourgault, opened the scoring in the middle of the first frame by deflecting a point shot from defender Yanni Kaldis past San Diego goaltender Lukas Dostal…
After James Hamblin made the score 2-0 in the first period, Savoie opened the second frame with a power-play goal to extend Bakersfield’s lead to 3-0. Bourgault grabbed a rebound beside the net and fed it through the crease to Savoie for an easy tap-in…
Savoie came close to burying another goal a few minutes later. Bourgault stripped the puck in the neutral zone and he and Savoie turned around and busted in on a two-on-one. Savoie got himself open and Bourgault feathered him a nice pass but Dostal slide across the crease and made an excellent save. Malone would wind up scoring to put the Condors up 4-0 later in the shift…
Savoie would wind up completing the hat trick in the dying minutes of the game while the Gulls had their net empty for an extra attacker. Savoie grabbed a turnover just inside Bakersfield’s blueline and he fired the puck down the ice and into the open net…
