Ryan McLeod was the star among Oilers’ prospects playing in Europe this past weekend.
Edmonton’s 2018 second-round pick scored his first two goals of the season for EV Zug in the team’s huge 8-2 win over the ZSC Lions, one of the league’s historically strong teams based in Zurich.
McLeod’s first goal opened the scoring a few minutes into the first period. He used his speed to pressure a Zurich defenceman, poked the puck away, broke in on a partial breakaway, and sniped a shot low blocker side to make the score 1-0.
In the third period, McLeod again showed his speed by taking an outlet pass in the neutral zone and ripping wide into the offensive zone past a Zurich defender before putting a nicely placed shot under the goalie’s blocker. McLeod’s second goal made the score 7-1.
McLeod now has two goals, five points, and a plus-four rating over seven games for Zug. The team currently sits at the top of the National League standings with a 6-1 record and an impressive 24-to-14 goal differential.
Elsewhere in Switzerland… Tyler Benson’s team (the GC Küsnacht Lions, who play in the Swiss League, which is the country’s second tier) has had its last three games postponed due to COVID-19. Benson has one goal and five points through five games, putting him in a tie for first on the team in points. His team is currently scheduled to play on Oct. 30 and Nov. 1.
