WEEKEND UPDATE!

Lowetide
This was a big week for Oilers prospects as the Bakersfield Condors got their season underway and several prospects in other leagues posted strong performances. The long season is underway for all and we can begin sussing out the contenders from the pretenders. College men in the AHL, and WHL skaters appear to be pushing early. BAKERSFIELD CONDORS

  1. LC Jujhar Khaira 2gp, 3-1-4
  2. L Scott Allen 3gp, 2-1-3
  3. R Taylor Beck 3gp, 0-3-3
  4. RD Matt Benning 2gp, 1-1-2 (rookie)
  5. L Joey Benik 3gp, 2-0-2 (rookie)
  6. L Ryan Hamilton 3gp, 0-2-2
  7. R Patrick Russell 3gp, 0-2-2 (rookie)
  8. LC Jere Sallinen 3gp, 1-0-1
  9. RC Kyle Platzer 3gp, 0-1-1
  10. LD Joey Laleggia 3gp, 0-1-1
  11. R Jaedon Descheneau 3gp, 0-1-1 (rookie)
  12. LD David Musil 1gp, 0-1-1
  13. LD Mark Fraser 3gp, 0-0-0
  14. L Mitch Moroz 3gp, 0-0-0
  15. LD Griffin Reinhart 3gp, 0-0-0
  16. LD Jordan Oesterle 3gp, 0-0-0
  17. LD Dillon Simpson 3gp, 0-0-0
  18. L Braden Christoffer 3gp, 0-0-0
  19. LC Josh Currie 2gp, 0-0-0
  20. RC Kris Newbury 2gp, 0-0-0
  21. G Nick Ellis 2gp, 2.53 .925 (rookie)
  22. G Laurent Brossoit 1gp, 2.05 .920
  • The first week stars for the Condors were Jujhar Khaira (who missed last night’s game with an injury—he is day-today), Matt Benning and the goalies.
  • The college men procured by Bob Green and Peter Chiarelli (and Rogers Place and Connor McDavid) are flying high above the draft picks. After one week, this isn’t close, save Khaira.

NORFOLK ADMIRALS, ECHL

  1. RD Frankie Simonelli 5gp, 0-1-1 (3gp, 0-1-1 this week)
  2. G Eetu Laurikainen 3gp, 2.02 .934 (one fabulous game this week, 24 save shutout)
  • Laurikainen spent part of the week in Bakersfield in a backup role, and is clearly an impact player at the ECHL level. I wonder if he and Simonelli will see Greg Chase and others in Norfolk, eventually.

CHL

  1. L Tyler Benson, Vancouver Giants 10gp, 6-6-12 (3gp, 1-2-3 this week)
  2. LD Caleb Jones, Portland Winterhawks 11gp, 1-7-8 (2gp, 0-1-1 this week)
  3. RD Ethan Bear, Seattle Thunderbirds 8gp, 1-2-3 (2gp, 1-0-1 this week)
  4. LD Markus Niemelainen, Saginaw Spirit 8gp, 0-1-1 (2gp, 0-1-1 this week)
  5. G Dylan Wells, Peterborough Petes 9gp, 3.15 .920 (One great and one poor game this week)
  • Benson played tonight and is beginning to stretch it out in the last two weeks. In that period, he is 7gp, 6-5-11. That kind of pace is going to help establish him as a top flight prospect, something injury robbed him of one year ago.

    USHL

    1. RC Aapeli Rasanen, Sioux City Musketeers 6gp, 1-3-4 (2gp, 0-2-2 this week)
    2. LD Matthew Cairns, Fargo Force 7gp, 0-1-1 (2gp, 0-1-1 this week)
    • The USHL is a good league but doesn’t get a lot of exposure. It will be interesting to see these players once they get to college, although we have seen Rasanen play for Finland in international competition. Cairns remains a curio, but did move the needle this week.

      NCAA

      1. RC Tyler Vesel, Nebraska-Omaha 4gp, 2-3-5 (3gp, 2-3-5 this week)
      2. L Aidan Muir, Western Michigan 4gp, 0-5-5 (DNP this week)
      3. L Graham McPhee, Boston College 6gp, 0-3-3 (3gp, 0-3-3 this week)
      4. L Evan Campbell, UMass-Lowell 5gp, 0-2-2 (2gp, 0-0-0 this week)
      5. LD William Lagesson, UMass-Amherst 3gp, 1-0-1 (1gp, 0-0-0 this week)
      6. RD John Marino, Harvard 1gp, 0-1-1 (1gp, 0-1-1 this week)
      7. LD Vincent Desharnais, Providence 2gp, 0-0-0 (DNP this week)
      8. G Zach Nagelvoort, Michigan 1gp, 4.05 .900 (DNP this week)
      • Tyler Vesel stormed the net all week long, as his season got underway in a big way.
      • Graham McPhee is new to us and was quiet in the early weeks of the season. A three-point game on Saturday changed all that and it will be fun to see him follow it up this week.
      • Vincent Desharnais and Zach Nagelvoort are not playing these days, although their respective teams have seen action. Never a good sign.

        EUROPE

        1. C Bogdan Yakimov, Neftekhimik (KHL) 16gp, 1-4-5 (2gp, 0-1-1 this week)
        2. RD Filip Berglund, Skelleftea (SHL) 9gp, 0-1-1 (3gp, 0-1-1 this week)
        3. LD Ziyat Paigin, AK Bars Kazan (KHL) 4gp, 0-0-0 (DNP this week)
        4. G Miroslav Svoboda, HC Dukla Jihlava (Cze 2) 7gp, 1.41 .955 (one impressive game this week)
        • Good news all around Europe this week. Ziyat Paigin is apparently close to returning, Yakimov and Berglund posted crooked offensive numbers and Miroslav Svoboda is having a crazy good season.
