WHAT A DAY!

The Edmonton Oilers made three transactions today, and the team looks a little different on paper as they prepare for the final stretch. The 50-man list got a haircut, and we have more clues about who is staying, and who is heading out.
One the day Peter Chiarelli took over, we knew there would be changes. Many were disappointed the GM didn’t make more changes last season, but as we approach the one-year anniversary of his hiring, the number of men no longer in the organization is growing. Here are the Oilers at the time of Chiarelli’s hiring, who are now gone (there were 46 names):

There are names not on that list (Derek Roy, etc) who were free agents when he took over, I have listed the RFAs because they were part of the 50-man at the time. Since taking over, along with offloading those 12 names, Chiarelli added the following men:

- D Adam Clendening

One of those players (Nilsson) was sent out today, Chiarelli having hired and then traded him in the time he has been GM.
CURRENT 50-MAN LIST
- G Cam Talbot, NHL starter for the next several seasons, hopefully.
- G Laurent Brossoit, AHL starter or NHL backup, a lock to be signed, RFA.
- G Eetu Laurikainen, AHL backup, he is signed for next year.
- D Andrej Sekera, top 4D, important part of the team.
- D Oscar Klefbom, likely top pairing, needs to stay healthy.
- D Mark Fayne, suspect he will be dealt if opportunity arises.
- D Brandon Davidson, top 6D and a new contract on the way. RFA.
- D Darnell Nurse, top 6D, another season of intense learning on the job.
- D Eric Gryba, I believe they will sign him as 6-7D.
- D Adam Clendening, no feel for him so far, jury is still out. RFA
- D Griffin Reinhart, another AHL year, or traded. Potential bonus $ force issue.
- D Brad Hunt, no reason to bring him back, his skills are duplicated.
- D Andrew Ference, they will buy him out (if able). That Stanley in Boston was beautiful.
- D Nikita Nikitin, he is gone.
- D David Musil, AHL D or traded. He is blocked by so many now.
- D Jordan Oesterle, AHL D. Speed gets him another deal, RFA.
- D Joey Laleggia, AHL D matriculating.
- D Dillon Simpson, AHL D, matriculating.
- D Martin Gernat, he will not be back.
- D Ben Betker, AHL D, matriculating.
- C Connor McDavid, Giant.
- C Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, quality NHL center.
- C Leon Draisaitl, emerging NHL talent.
- C Mark Letestu, checking NHL C.
- C Anton Lander, they may find a buyer.
- C Jujhar Khaira, he is a good bet to make the roster in the fall.
- C Andrew Miller, fine AHL player, less than 50 percent to return. UFA.
- C Bogdan Yakimov, a chance he comes back. Has NHL tools, speed concern.
- C Kyle Platzer, AHL C matriculating.
- L Taylor Hall, impact NHL player.
- L Benoit Pouliot, solid winger having a good year.
- L Zack Kassian, probably part of the future in a top 9F role.
- L Lauri Korpikoski, buyout candidate imo, unless they can trade.
- L Matt Hendricks, checking NHL W, I bet Oil get impressive trade offers for him.
- L Luke Gazdic, enforcer could be retained but it is not certain.
- L Ryan Hamilton, AHL winger, suspect they move on from him.
- L Kale Kessy, AHL winger/enforcer could return, not a lock.
- L Mitch Moroz, AHL winger/enforcer, matriculating.
- L Braden Christoffer, rugged winger, matriculating.
- R Jordan Eberle, scoring winger. I believe he will be in play.
- R Nail Yakupov, I think they trade him before fall.
- R Iiro Pakarinen, Todd McLellan loves him. RFA.
- R Rob Klinkhammer, might be back on a two-way deal.
- R Anton Slepyshev, talented winger should push for NHL time.
- R Tyler Pitlick, Could be gone.
- R Greg Chase, minor league winger, matriculating.
It takes time to cull the herd. I have underlined 12 names, could be more. Peter Chiarelli sent away three today, when will he send the next man away? I suspect we won’t have to wait long.
