That was hard to watch. There are games left, but the season is over. The team has checked out.

Highlights

This was a rough one by Adam Larsson. I hate to rag on the dude because I think he’s a solid player with horrific expectations because of who he was traded for, but woof, that was ugly. I’m going to leave this as the only highlight because it’s the perfect summary of not just the game but the season. To add a cherry on top, it was Zach Parise, the Mat Barzal of the 2003 draft for the Oilers, opening the scoring.

By the numbers

The Wild dominated the first period, getting 18 even strength shot attempts to Edmonton’s 11. It was reversed in the second when the Oilers had 18 shot attempts and Minnesota had 11. Then, in the third, with the 2-0, Edmonton just kind of gave up and Wild grinded them into paste. Minnesota got 26 shot attempts and the Oilers could only muster seven. It goes to show how good of a team the Wild can be when they get a lead and where the Oilers are at by this point in the season.

Thoughts…

  • The season is almost over, thank goodness. There was a point in which the team was kind of riding a bit of a hot streak largely due to good play from Connor McDavid and Cam Talbot, but now, it’s clear they’ve mailed it in for the year. By the time Parise scored his second goal, it was like watching the clock run out. Watching some high-energy playoff hockey should be both fun and incredibly depressing. Also, it’s baseball season and the Jays look quite good through their first five games.
  • Cam Talbot actually played incredibly well as the Oilers, who were down to four defencemen mid-way through the game, allowed 39 shots on goal. Allowing just the two Parise goals (the third was on the empty net) is very impressive given the effort of the team last night.
  • Twitter was a good time, at least.
