Women of Oilersnation: Shannon Szabados

2 years agoRumour has it our next Women of Oilersnation feature woman has Edmonton’s greatest flow, and she’s not too shabby between the pipes either.
Shannon Szabados is a 2x Olympic gold medalist, 1x Olympic silver medalist and a world champion, but what truly makes her the MVP is the incredible woman she is. I’m lucky enough to call Shan one of my closest friends and I can confirm she’s as much of a beauty off the ice as she is on!

MEET SHANNON SZABADOS!
KYLA: Who are you?! What do you do, what are your passions, what’s something interesting about you?
SHANNON: I’m Shannon! I play and coach hockey! I wrote and illustrated a children’s book called Every Bunny Loves to Play.
KYLA: How did you get into hockey and sports in general?
SHANNON: Growing up in Edmonton I would watch the Oilers with my dad. One day I asked my parents if I could play hockey and I’ve been playing ever since!
KYLA: Out of your entire playing career, what’s your favourite moment?
SHANNON: Easy one – Vancouver 2010 Olympics on home ice! The atmosphere was insane. That, coupled with it being my first Olympics made it an incredible experience.
KYLA: Are you going to be able to handle it if your daughter, Shaylyn wants to be a goalie?
SHANNON: Nooooooo!!! Everyone assumes I want her to be a goalie haha. Truth is, I would be a nervous wreck. I’d much prefer her to play defence like her dad. Obviously assuming she wants plays hockey at all haha
KYLA: What’s your favourite Oilers memory?
SHANNON: Probably going to games and practices as a kid with my parents. Trying to get autographs and high fives from the players. I would get tickets for Christmas every now and then and those were always my favourite!

KYLA: What makes you the most proud to be from Edmonton?
SHANNON: The love and passion for sports! Through thick and thin this city loves its sports and I could always see and feel the love for our National Teams as well! You can see it from the grassroots up through to beer league and pros, and not just hockey either, but all sports, which is the best part.
KYLA: What does hockey and being a part of the Oilersnation community mean to you?
SHANNON: I love this city, I bleed blue & orange! I was born and raised here, went to school here, played all my minor sports here. Edmonton has shaped me into the person I am today and I will always be a diehard part of the OilersNation community.
