WORLD JUNIORS DAY ONE

The world Junior Championships hold sway in this country in a way that can’t possibly be justified by the actual prize at sake. No sir. The appeal of the WJ’s is the “lore” of the event and many of the significant moments in the tournament’s history have been provided by teenagers drafted by the Edmonton Oilers. What does this year’s tournament hold for us? Hold on!

OILERS’ PROSPECTS

William Lagesson had a strong game for Sweden today, playing solid defense, providing effective outlet passes and coming to the aid of a fallen teammate late in the contest. It’s important to remind ourselves this is the ultimate tournament of small sample sizes but Lagesson’s performance today is a nice item all the same.

NURSE!

Darnell Nurse is a big defenseman with a major league edge. I’d tell you the last one Edmonton drafted and developed but I honestly don’t remember. He’s a pleasant young man off the ice (from what we know) but when he puts on the uniform Nurse is a nasty piece of work. THAT’S why the Oilers drafted him.
I thought Nurse played well tonight, although he certainly has the rover in him. When he turns pro, the ramblin’ man will have to pick his spots to roam. At this level he can get out of position and recover in time. His size/speed combination is terrific, it’s a matter of being patient and developing those “calm feet” as a defender. He’s wildly talented and I think wants to be a bigger part of the action (Team Canada seemed to be using him sparingly—haven’t seen TOI).

THE RIDICULOUS EICHEL

Buddy’s a freak. He had several fine moments but I’ll pick this bit of ridiculousness for a highlight. He’s the consolation prize? Okay. The thing I noticed most about Eichel is how much the play flows through him. He’s an exciting player with an amazing future.

MCDAVID

I thought he showed flashes tonight but there were other Canadians driving the game. It’s important to remember he’s coming back from injury and this is a 19-year old tournament.
God I love this tournament! More tomorrow.
