A pair of Edmonton Oilers players placed on waivers Sunday have gone unclaimed, according to Oilersnation’s Jason Gregor.
Both Andrew Mangiapane and Alec Regula will now need to report to the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors and appear in one game for them before being eligible to be recalled.
Edmonton is expected to recall forwards Josh Samanski and Isaac Howard from the Condors, Gregor reported, allowing the Oilers to maximize their cap space with Mattias Janmark expected to land on the long-term injured reserve.
The Oilers signed Mangiapane to a two-year, $3.6-million AAV deal last summer, but things haven’t quite worked out. While his seven goals on the year are still more than Trent Frederic, Adam Henrique and Mattias Janmark combined, that mark and his 14 points in 52 games are significant dips in his production from previous seasons.
Just last year with the Capitals, he racked up 14 goals and 28 points in 81 games, and the year before he had 14 goals and 40 points in 75 games with the Calgary Flames. That’s not even accounting for the fact he put up 35 goals and 55 points in 2021-22, either.
His production relative to some of the other bottom-six forwards the Oilers have had this year has been solid, but it’s nowhere near what the Oilers were hoping for. And with his cap hit what it is, the team has been unsuccessfully searching for a trade partner since late December, though recent reports suggest a trade partner will be found by Friday’s 1 p.m. MT deadline.
Regula, meanwhile, has appeared in 29 games for the Oilers this season but has struggled in much of his NHL tenure. He’s notched three assists in those games, though his last NHL action came on Jan. 20. He was loaned to the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors on Feb. 18 on a conditioning stint, which he was recalled from ahead of Saturday’s game against the San Jose Sharks.
Samanski, 23, made his NHL debut on Jan. 26 against the Anaheim Ducks, playing in five games ahead of the Olympic break, where he represented his home country of Germany alongside Oilers teammate Leon Draisaitl. He appeared in five games, scoring a goal and adding an assist, spending some time on Draisaitl’s line.
Signed by the Oilers as a free agent last summer, he’s spent most of his season with the Condors, scoring eight goals and 31 points in 44 games, playing in all situations.
Howard, meanwhile, is on his second recall with the Oilers this season. He’s appeared in 28 games with the team this season scoring two goals and five points, making the team out of training camp and sticking with them until the middle of November, when he was sent to the Condors. His second NHL stint came in January, playing 11 games, before being sent back down. He’s been tremendous during his time with the Condors, scoring 14 goals and 32 points in 30 games.
The Oilers schedule continues Tuesday, hosting the Ottawa Senators, before welcoming the Carolina Hurricanes to town Friday night and kicking off a five-game road trip Sunday against the Vegas Golden Knights. It will continue with stops in Colorado, Dallas and St. Louis.
