Bakersfield Condors defenceman Brandon Manning has been suspended for five games in the American Hockey League for using a racial slur towards an opponent.
The incident happened during the second period of a Monday night game against the Ontario Reign.
He was assessed a 10-minute misconduct for the use of the slur which happened at the 5:57 mark of the second period.
“Last night I made comments to an opposing player that were stupid and offensive. After the game, I spoke with the opposing player in person, which I’m very grateful for,” Manning said in a statement released via the Condors Tuesday. “He allowed me to apologize and I took full responsibility for what I said. To say I’ve learned from this situation is an understatement and I promise to be better.”
In a statement, Oilers AGM and Condors GM Keith Gretzky said they were aware of the comment.
“We are aware of an unacceptable comment directed toward an Ontario Reign player by Bakersfield Condors defencemen Brandon Manning during last night’s game,” Gretzky said. “This is a very serious matter, we are disappointed by Brandon’s comment and we fully support the American Hockey League’s decision. The Oilers and Condors organizations wholeheartedly believe in a respectful workplace and will work to better educate our players on appropriate conduct on and off the ice.”
Manning has appeared in 10 games for the Condors this season posting four assists and a -8 rating. He is in the final season of a two-year contract paying him $2.25-million.
