And then there was one.
A two-goal, three-point performance from Connor McDavid Wednesday night against the Minnesota Wild propelled Connor McDavid to second all-time in scoring in the Edmonton Oilers’ record books.
The only one standing in his way of taking hold of first is Wayne Gretzky.
McDavid’s night saw him score his 1,042nd, 1,043rd, and 1,044th points to pass Jari Kurri, who scored 1,043 points during his 754 games with the Oilers. The gap between 97 and 99 is still a large one, as he’ll need to score another 625 points to tie him, and 626 to pass him.
With 1.52 career points per game to his name, McDavid would need 411 more games scoring at that pace to pass Gretzky — something he will do with ease should he follow suit with Leon Draisaitl in signing a long-term extension to stay in Edmonton. Should he remain healthy and scoring at such pace, McDavid would pass Gretzky roughly halfway through the 2029 season.
Draisaitl, who recently passed Glenn Anderson for fifth on the Oilers all-time scoring list, is hot on the trail of Mark Messier (1,034 points, fourth) and Kurri. He would be hard-pressed to score 119 more points this season to pass Messier, let alone 128 to pass Kurri, but by this time next year, the conversation will be different.
What’s remarkable about McDavid becoming the second highest-scoring player in Oilers history is in how many games he did it: just 686 games. The Great One, meanwhile, scored his 1,669 points in Oilers threads in just 10 more games than McDavid did 1,044.
