The turbulent start to the season for the Edmonton Oilers continued on Monday night as the team lost 5-1 to the Buffalo Sabres, sparking digs from the opposing commentary team directed specifically at the goaltending.
Given how things went, fans are still disgusted by the start to the 25-26 season. It even caused debate at Oilersnation HQ about whether this loss was more embarrassing than the 9-1 battering by the Colorado Avalanche. As always, fans did not hold back when voicing their frustrations online.

“Knoblauch needs to be fired without delay. He had the opportunity to remake his coaching staff this summer and the result is some of the worst Oilers hockey since before the McDavid draft. Send them all packing. The entire staff.” – SportsThor via X
“Some of the decade of darkness teams were more fun than the 2025-26 Oilers. At least occasionally during the DOD they would inexplicably slap around the Blackhawks or Hall would get benched for showing too much emotion and hating losing. This group is listless from the coach down.” – AdamsOnHockey via X

“Flames and Oilers have four regulation wins each, and Calgary has played one fewer game. Yikes, Edmonton.” – Darren Haynes via X
Some Oilers fans have even reached the point where they believe the team needs to start focusing on the draft and selecting top defenceman Keaton Verhoef. Remember, this is year 11 of Connor McDavid, and we are having this discussion in November, before American Thanksgiving.

Over on the Oilers subreddit, u/Prestigious_Push_155 put together a thread that gained some attention, wondering if the team should consider the option of tanking or at least a strategy of some sort at the trade deadline. The responses were mixed.
“You do not tank without selling. This team, even if it does not make the playoffs, is too good to be even close to McKenna without selling.”
“No, because our pick will not be in the top 12, so you either hold the pick or trade it for something. You do not tank. It would be a better question to ask if you trade the 2027 first or hold it for the summer. That is a more interesting question than asking if we tank.”
“I could really see us tanking tbh.”
“Wat???? You are not serious right? McDrai prime year, tank? Like come on now OP. I do not care if we end up one point out of a playoff spot. We do not tank now. Full stop. That is totally the wrong message to everyone. We went to the Cup the last two years and lost no significant pieces from those runs. There is no way I can take this post seriously.”
“I would like to keep McDavid on the team and tanking for McKenna is not an option. He is 100 percent gone if we do not even get to playoffs.”
An Oilers loss, given the current state of the team, will prompt the fanbase to ponder the wildest ideas. But most fans do not understand how the team is playing the way it is and are questioning some recent moves by management.
“Can we place Frederic on waivers for the purpose of contract termination? Solid pickup!” – the_nelsonteixeira via Instagram
“Losing by a goal? Let’s take away our depth and lose more.” – treiks_86 via Instagram
“I am sorry but we are a wildcard team at best. This roster construction just is not it. And I am not being reactionary with this, I have felt this way for a while. We are going through so much change that a lot of work has to be done and I am sure it will get better with our cap situation but as of right now, we are nowhere near a contender with this current roster and its goaltending tandem.” – toughcookie9000 via Instagram
“How do we get outgoalied by a guy who has played three NHL games in his life, what are we doing.” – Kazimierz__R via Instagram
“Looks like they quit on Knob and Bowman.” – Noah McCabe via Facebook
“Boys look completely disconnected out there. Cannot connect passes, cannot get organized on the forecheck, cannot get organized on defence, cannot clear a puck, cannot aim for anything but directly at the goaltender. What the hell is going on?” – Andrew Thom via Facebook
I would provide more comments from Facebook, but some of them are just so ruthless compared to what you find on other platforms.
After McDavid signed his extension in October, just before the season started, you would think Oilers fans would be loving life by now, but this has been yet another chaotic start to a season. It feels as if many have seen this film before, but this time, it is hard to say if fans will like the ending.
