The Edmonton Oilers have announced that defenceman Matt Benning has been assigned to the Bakersfield Condors of the American Hockey League.
The assignment was on a conditioning loan, the club announced.

Benning agreed to do this. He wants to play and get some games under his belt before jumping into playoff race intensity. Player has to agree to go down on a conditioning stint.

Benning, 23, has missed a significant portion of the season due to multiple concussions.
He was initially injured on Nov. 19 in a game against the @San Jose Sharks, and returned to face the @Vancouver Canucks on Dec. 1. Concussed again, Benning has yet to return to play.
The defenceman will head to Bakersfield where the AHL club plays four times this week including back-to-back against Tucson. His assignment is a good indication that Benning is close to returning to play when the Oilers return from the all-star break for a Jan. 29 game against the @Calgary Flames.
Benning has played in 24 games for the Oilers this season scoring five points.
