<p>The Edmonton Oilers have announced that defenceman Matt Benning has been assigned to the Bakersfield Condors of the American Hockey League.</p>
<p>The assignment was on a conditioning loan, the club announced.</p>

<p>Benning, 23, has missed a significant portion of the season due to multiple concussions.</p>
<p>He was initially injured on Nov. 19 in a game against the @San Jose Sharks, and returned to face the @Vancouver Canucks on Dec. 1. Concussed again, Benning has yet to return to play.</p>
<p>The defenceman will head to Bakersfield where the AHL club plays four times this week including back-to-back against Tucson. His assignment is a good indication that Benning is close to returning to play when the Oilers return from the all-star break for a Jan. 29 game against the @Calgary Flames.</p>
<p>Benning has played in 24 games for the Oilers this season scoring five points.</p>
