Edmonton Oilers assistant general manager Bill Scott, known best for his lucky socks, has interviewed with the Nashville Predators for their vacant general manager’s job, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported.
Scott joined the Oilers organization as the general manager of their AHL affiliate, the Oklahoma City Barons, for the 2010-11 season, spending four years there. He was bumped up the ranks to the Oilers assistant general manager job. Over the last dozen years, he’s held that role, the director of hockey operations role for the Oilers, as well as the general manager job for the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors from 2015-17.
According to Friedman, while the Predators haven’t held any in-person interviews with external candidates, they are shrinking their list of candidates.
Nashville is shrinking its list of GM contenders. I don’t believe any external candidate has interviewed in-person. Not sure of the timeline, but that’s going to change in the near future. In addition to the already reported names, others who have been spoken to include St. Louis Vice-President of Hockey Operations Peter Chiarelli and an intriguing fresh name, Edmonton assistant GM Bill Scott. It’s a wide net and we’re still figuring out who else is involved.
The Oilers owe something towards Scott’s lucky socks, which CEO Bob Nicholson gave to Scott ahead of the 2015 NHL draft lottery. They were red socks with white Canadian flags on them, and on the bottom, said “Good Luck Socks.”
Turns out they worked, as the Oilers would win the draft lottery and the chance to draft Connor McDavid first overall.
“As a member of the Oilers hockey management team, Scott’s responsibilities include player and staff contract negotiations, scheduling, salary arbitration, salary cap management and all day to day administrative duties,” his biography reads on the Oilers website. “He is also the club’s liaison to the NHL regarding matters pertaining to the Collective Bargaining Agreement.”
