Connor McDavid continues to rewrite the records book with a milestone assist in Columbus.
By getting an assist on a goal from Zach Hyman, McDavid reached the 100-point plateau this season. It is the seventh time he has reached this milestone in his career and he became just the sixth player in NHL history and the only active player to achieve this impressive feat.
The other five players who were able to achieve what McDavid just did are Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Marcel Dione, Mike Bossy, and Peter Stastny. Not too shabby of company to find himself in that is for sure.
What makes this achievement so impressive is that this came after he had a sluggish start to the season by his offensive standards, including five scoreless games in November. The fact he was able to not only turn his season around and get within arms reach of both Nathan MacKinnon and Nikita Kucherov for the scoring title in short order speaks volumes of just how special of a talent he is.
Heading into tonight’s game against the Blue Jackets, McDavid was recording 1.71 points per game which has him on track to finish the year with roughly 140 points. Although that will have him finish behind his career-high 153-point campaign from a season ago, that will still be good enough to be the second-best scoring output of his career. On top of that, his point-per-game pace is higher than MacKinnon and Kucherov’s, so McDavid certainly has a chance to snag his sixth career Art Ross Trophy.
With the type of talent we are dealing with here, it would not be a stretch to say that he can continue to push the pace and perhaps even surpass it.
Either way, seeing McDavid continue to rewrite the NHL history books will never get old and who knows how many more records he will set by the time he hangs up his skates for good.
