Edmonton Oilers defenceman Evan Bouchard was closer to being a top-three finalist for the Norris Trophy than not.
The NHL announced Tuesday that Columbus Blue Jackets defenceman Zach Werenski had won the 2025-26 Norris Trophy, while also peeling back the curtain on who received how many votes. Werenski won with 113 of 198 first-place votes for 1,589 voting points, while Colorado Avalanche defenceman Cale Makar finished second with 47 first-place votes, and 1,191 voting points.
Buffalo Sabres defenceman Rasmus Dahlin, meanwhile, finished third with 13 first-place votes and 657 voting points, while Bouchard finished with 12 first-place votes, and 593 voting points. Bouchard received 22 second-place votes, 36 third-place votes, and received the most fourth-place votes, and was tied for the most fifth-place votes.
Bouchard appeared in all 82 regular-season games for the Oilers this year, scoring 21 goals and 95 points, while averaging 24:41 in ice-time, all three marks being career highs for the 26-year-old. While he was the Oilers’ go-to defenceman at five-on-five, also quarterbacking the top power play unit, Bouchard added penalty kill work to his resume, leading all Oilers defencemen in shorthanded time-on-ice.
He became the ninth defenceman in league history to score more than 20 goals and 95 points in a single season.
Bouchard has appeared on two Norris ballots previously, finishing fifth in 2023-24 and 11th in 2024-25.
Werenski was near the top of many statistical categories among defencemen this season, finishing tied for third for goals (22), tied for first in even-strength goals (18), tied for fourth in assists (59) and second for points (81).
