Oilers GM Bowman: Goaltending will improve if ‘defence can manage the puck better’

Not a day goes by that goaltending isn’t a conversation amongst fans of the Edmonton Oilers. Both Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard have been under a microscope since the season began on October 8, with each goal allowed being nitpicked by fans looking for someone to blame.
Edmonton Oilers GM Stan Bowman sat down with Bob Stauffer on Oilers Now on Monday afternoon to discuss the position that has drawn the most scrutiny around Oil Country, and he sounded more optimistic about his goalies than most.
“The goaltending, it does get a lot of attention in Edmonton, for sure, I feel like that’s the question we get the most. Skinner, in particular, I think, has been pretty solid this year. He’s given us a lot of good performances.I think Calvin probably hasn’t started this year the way he did last year, when he was really effective and won some huge games for us. We certainly want to see that version of him come back. But I think if there’s a positive from that side, Skinner’s trending in the right direction. He’s shown us that he can win some games like that game in New York. I think we didn’t play well that night in Madison Square Garden. He got that win for us that night. Other nights, even the last game in Carolina, I thought he did stand tall under some pressure from a good team.So I think what we’re looking for is our goaltending to be solid, and in conjunction with that, if our defence can manage the puck better, then I think we’re going to be more effective as a team.”
Earlier in his chat with Stauffer, Bowman mentioned that he believes the defence’s inconsistencies have been a key part of the team’s struggles so far this season.
“The defence, they haven’t played a consistent game this year. And I think that’s probably the biggest disappointment so far. The play of our D is really important in getting the rest of our game going. When we struggle to break the puck out cleanly, we end up disjointed a little bit. We’re not connected as a group. We’ve heard our players talk about that. It starts with the back and being able to be clean with the puck, sometimes underhandle it, move it, and get it going.”
It doesn’t sound like Edmonton’s GM is in a rush to make a goalie change, despite all the noise coming from the peanut gallery. The fans want timely saves, but Bowman may view that they haven’t been in the best environment to succeed, considering how the defence has held up.
After Monday’s 5-1 loss in Buffalo, Skinner is 7-5-3 on the season with a 2.86 goals-against average and a .889 save percentage. Pickard, meanwhile, is sporting a 4.17 GAA and an .830 save percentage after seven games played.
Fans are running low on patience with the goaltending, while the Oilers brass still has plenty left.
