One of the best sharpshooters in the game hit a milestone to begin the new year.
In the Edmonton Oilers’ first game of the 2025-26 season on Wednesday night, forward Leon Draisaitl potted the 400th goal of his NHL career, making him the ninth-fastest non-North American player to reach the mark.
The German sensation achieved the milestone in his 791st game. Only Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin stands ahead of Drasaitl on the active list, as the greatest goal scorer in the history of the sport scored 400 goals in 634 games.
Draisaitl also became just the fourth player in franchise history to reach 400 goals as a member of the team. The tally came a little before the halfway mark of the second period against the Calgary Flames. It came after a nice feed from rookie David Tomášek, on the power play, giving the Czech his first NHL point as well.

Along with hitting the 400 mark, the 29-year-old also scored his franchise-leading 163rd power play goal of his storied career. Draisaitl registered a goal and an assist in Edmonton’s 4-3 shootout loss in the first edition of The Battle of Alberta this year.
There’s no question about Draisaitl’s scoring prowess and how it has made him one of the NHL’s superstars. Since 2018, he has only missed out on reaching 40 goals once, which came during the COVID-shortened 2021 season. The former third-overall pick has reached 50 goals four times in his career, including a career-high 55 during the 2021-22 season.
Last season, he won the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy for the first time in his tenure in the league. Draisaitl was the only player to reach 50 goals during the 2024-25 campaign, notching 52 goals in 71 games. At his current pace, Draisaitl is on his way to scoring 82 goals this year…unlikely, but you never know.
During his 11-plus seasons with the Oilers, Draisaitl has also registered 558 assists and 958 points, with another 52 goals and 141 points in 96 postseason games. He’s fifth on the franchise’s all-time scoring list, 76 points back of Mark Messier for fourth.
