One of the longest-serving members of the Edmonton Oilers has requested a trade.
A week after a report surfaced that the organization would approach Darnell Nurse to ask him to waive his no-movement clause, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman and Mark Spector reported Thursday that the defenceman wants out.
The previous report, from Spector, indicated that the Oilers would like to trade Nurse “as soon as possible,” and that for the second straight year, the team would approach him to gauge his interest.
“According to multiple sources, the defenceman recently went to the organization and said he would like to be traded,” Friedman and Spector wrote. “He now feels it is time for him to move on.”
Nurse, who has a full movement protection through the 2026-27 season, provided the Oilers with a list of three-to-five teams he would consider, Friedman and Spector reported.
Drafted by the Oilers seventh overall in the 2013 draft, Nurse broke into the NHL in the 2015-16 season, appearing in 69 games, scoring three goals and 10 points. He has since played 798 games across 12 seasons, the seventh-most in franchise history and the second-most among defencemen, scoring 88 goals and 324 points.
Nurse, 31, signed an eight-year, $74-million contract with the team in August 2021, earning him a $9.25-million AAV, according to PuckPedia. He has four years left on the deal, and is owed $6 million in signing bonuses in each of the upcoming seasons. Spector previously reported that the bonus is due to be paid out in season, not on July 1, as is common.
During the 2024 Stanley Cup final, discussions occurred about potentially healthy-scratching Nurse, but the team instead opted to limit his minutes. That summer, Nurse’s name first began to appear on trade boards by hockey insiders.
News leaked last summer that the Oilers had approached Nurse to see if he was willing to waive his no-movement clause to help facilitate a trade, something he declined to do, leaving him “upset.” It reportedly left Nurse upset, and it became clear as the season went on that the coaching staff had been losing faith in the blue-liner’s abilities. He averaged 20:58 in ice time in the regular season, the third-lowest of his career and the lowest since the 2016-17 season.
Nurse has been a serviceable player for the team, contributing at the rate of a second-pairing defenceman for years, according to HockeyViz. But with Nurse’s salary at that of a first-pairing defenceman, the Oilers are likely looking to find more efficient use of his salary.
It’s unknown which teams are included on Nurse’s list. He’s represented by agent Paul Capizzano of Quartexx Management.
