Sixteen years after being drafted first overall by the Edmonton Oilers in 2010, Taylor Hall will have his name etched on the Stanley Cup.
On Sunday evening, the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0, winning their second Stanley Cup in franchise history. Hall was instrumental in both their Stanley Cup victory and the Game 6 win itself, scoring the game-winning goal, finishing with seven goals and 19 points in 19 games.
Hall’s best series was against the Ottawa Senators in the first round, scoring two goals and seven points in four games. He added a goal and five points in their sweep of the Philadelphia Flyers, before adding two goals and four points in the five games they played against the Montréal Canadiens in the Conference Finals. The Calgary product scored just two goals and three points in the Hurricanes’ six games against the Golden Knights.
In the end, the longest-tenured Hurricane, Jordan Staal, claimed the Conn Smythe Trophy, becoming the oldest player to do so. Still, it was a terrific postseason for the former Oiler, finishing tied for third in playoff points.
Who could’ve seen that happening all those years back? Hall never suited up for a playoff game for the Oilers. Nor were they particularly close to making the postseason before they traded him to the New Jersey Devils shortly after the conclusion of the 2015-16 season.
Eventually, he led the Devils to the postseason, winning the 2017-18 Hart Trophy in the process. It wasn’t until the 2020-21 season that Hall made it out of the first round (in a non-COVID-impacted season), doing so with the Boston Bruins. After the Hurricanes acquired him from the Chicago Blackhawks during the 2024-25 season, Hall made is to the Conference Finals before they were bounced by the Florida Panthers.
Now 34, Hall has his name on the Stanley Cup. It’s hard not to crack a smile for the Oilers’ first overall pick in 2010. Hopefully, it’s the Oilers hoisting the Cup in June 2027, but first, they’re going to have a very busy off-season.
