It was on this day in 1986 that @Edmonton Oilers legend, Wayne Gretzky, set what is likely to be an untouchable record with his 215th point of the season.
In the Oilers’ final game of the 1985-86 regular season, Wayne Gretzky added to his own single-season points record by registering a secondary assist on the early third period goal by Marty McSorley in a 3-2 victory over the lowly @Vancouver Canucks. This face-melting run of excellence broke Gretzky’s own record of 212 points which came during the 1981-82 season. Personally, I can’t imagine anyone ever coming close to breaking this record seeing as @Leon Draisaitl, the current NHL points leader from 2019-20, was on pace for 127 points, which is only 88 short of Gretzky’s benchmark. Different eras, I know, but these numbers are still crazy.
As of this writing and probably forever, Wayne Gretzky still holds the top-four spots for single-season point totals with 215 (85-86), 212 (81-82), 208 (84-85), and 205 (83-84). Even crazier is the fact that he holds eight of the top-10 positions, interrupted only by a pair of phenomenal years by Mario Lemieux that landed him in fifth and eighth.
