Brady Stonehouse stepped onto the Edmonton Oilers scene last year as an invite to the Young Stars Classic held annually in Penticton, B.C. Stonehouse was easily the most visible of the camp invites playing in all three games. The Edmonton Oilers thought so highly of the player that he was signed to a three-year, entry-level deal in October of 2023 and so began the journey of Brady Stonehouse as an Edmonton Oiler prospect. This year he enters the prospect countdown at #17.
Stonehouse is a stockily built left winger who plays a straightforward and very hard game. At 5’10” and 194 pounds, he is built well to handle the rigours of professional hockey which he could enter this season.
Here is the quintessential Brady Stonehouse shift. This is how he plays every time he hits the ice.
Here is another brief clip of what Oiler fans can expect from Stonehouse.
Stonehouse will not get cheated on shifts and that does bode well when he turns professional. He will engage in all aspects of the game against any player. This will make him a fan favourite, but also a coach favourite.
In terms of scoring, the 20-year-old had a very mixed year this past season with the OHL’s Ottawa 67’s. While he tallied 20-24—44 in 64 games, that was down dramatically from his prior season of 37-20—57 in 68 games. There is no question he had some injury issues this past season, but he really got off to a slow start and never recovered. The one element of his game that was most notable in terms of why his point totals were down was his shooting percentage.
In the 2022-23 season, Stonehouse took 244 shots for 3.6 shots per game which is a healthy total. He scored at a clip of 15.2 percent on those shots. Last season, Stonehouse took 232 shots for a shots per game total of 3.6 again. However, his shooting percentage fell to 8.6 percent. This precipitous decline was certainly the reason his scoring totals went backwards. His tools look like he can score. He has a strong release and a very accurate shot.
The worry is the release can be a little on the slow side allowing players to get into his physical space before he releases the puck. That will need to improve as he progresses into the professional ranks.
However, the true question for Brady Stonehouse in the 2024-25 hockey season is all about shooting percentage. Is he an 8.6 percent shooter, a 15.2 percent shooter or something in between? This will be the tell on how Stonehouse progresses through the prospect ranks with the Edmonton Oilers.
