The Edmonton Oilers and Darnell Nurse could be one step closer to making a trade.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman at 1:09 p.m. MT, Nurse will loosen his list of three teams he’d be willing to accept a trade to.
“There is word this afternoon that Darnell Nurse has agreed to expand his list of teams he will accept a trade to,” wrote Friedman. “San Jose is one to watch. We will see where it goes.”
TSN’s Ryan Rishaug said similar in a tweet: “Oilers have some irons in the fire on him.”
The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta said on Daily Faceoff’s Free Agent Special that Anaheim and San Jose are both now on Nurse’s list.
The Oilers’ ability to make other moves has been largely at a standstill with Nurse’s $9.25 million contract still on the books and $7.415 million in cap space, according to PuckPedia.
Reportedly, the three teams that were on his list were Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Boston, but each team wanted the Oilers to retain a couple million in a deal. However, California-based teams like Anaheim and San Jose might be open to taking Nurse’s full cap hit.
“I think there is a deal with Philly with retention of around $2.6 to $3 million, something along those lines,” said David Pagnotta on Oilersnation Everyday on Tuesday, before free agency began. “Pittsburgh wanted more (retention). I don’t know the full parameters of that (Philadelphia) deal. I’ve heard Nick Seeler.
“I think they’re pushing Nurse in the Anaheim, San Jose direction,” said Pagnotta. “It hasn’t worked yet, so we’ll see if there’s any further traction.”
Nurse is owed $6 million in bonuses with a low base salary of just $2 million in 2026-27 and $1.2 million in the last three years of his contract. His bonuses are paid out in three installments: $2 million on Nov. 15, $2 million on Dec. 15, and $2 million on Feb. 15.
