Pagnotta: Flyers want Oilers to retain near $3 million in Nurse-Seeler swap

Some more details on Darnell Nurse trade returns are emerging.
The Edmonton Oilers seem to be at a standstill, with reports indicating they want Nurse to expand his three-team trade list of Boston, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia.
Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period is indicating that Anaheim and San Jose have not mentioned retention in their trade offers to Edmonton, but so far, Nurse hasn’t opened up the list of teams he’s willing to go to. With the original list, the Oilers wouldn’t be gaining much cap space if that’s what they value most in a trade.
Pagnotta believes so far for Nurse, it’s been “Philly or bust.”
“You’re not freeing up nine million. You’re probably not freeing up five,” Pagnotta said on Oilersnation Everyday on Tuesday.
“I think there is a deal with Philly with retention of around $2.6 to $3 million, something along those lines. Pittsburgh wanted more. I don’t know the full parameters of that deal. I’ve heard Nick Seeler.”
Seeler is entering his third year of a four-year contract with a $2.7 million cap hit, according to PuckPedia. If the Oilers retained $3 million and took Seeler back, they’d gain $3.55 million in cap space. The 33-year-old is a clear third-pair option who played 80 games with the Flyers last season and put up 10 points.
Mason Lohrei rumours emerge
Boston Globe reporter Kevin Paul Dupont said on X on Tuesday morning that the Oilers and Bruins were discussing a deal around defenceman Mason Lohrei.
“Murmurings during draft weekend out of EDM that Oil could be down for a Nurse-Lohrei swap, with Oil willing to ‘share’ the difference in AAVs (approx $6M spread),” he wrote.
“I could see Bruins moving from Lohrei’s $3.2M AAV to something around $6.5M AAV for Nurse.”
The 25-year-old is a former second-round pick who will finish a two-year contract in 2026-27. He will be a restricted free agent afterwards.
Anaheim has holes in their blue line with so few NHLers with contracts at the moment. San Jose is also looking to bolster their defensive corps, but are linked to Morgan Rielly as well.
There could be a push for each team to wait until later this week and see how the start of free agency goes before committing to a trade.
“I think they’re pushing Nurse in the Anaheim, San Jose direction,” said Pagnotta. “It hasn’t worked yet, so we’ll see if there’s any further traction.
“There is motivation on both sides to just get it done relatively soon. I’d be surprised if he’s at camp. I really would. I’d be surprised if this goes into August. I’m a little surprised this hasn’t already happened, to be honest…For now it’s Philly or bust, unless he changes his mind for the Ducks.”
