The Edmonton Oilers will be aiming to rebound from a disappointing eastern road trip as they return home for Friday to take on the slumping Calgary Flames as -140 favourites on the NHL odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
An unscheduled four-day layoff in Montreal last week in the wake of a COVID-19 outbreak in the Canadiens dressing room quickly dampened the momentum the Oilers took with them on the road. The team struggled to earn a split in a subsequent two-game set in Toronto, and was embarrassed in Tuesday’s 4-0 loss to the Canadiens that leaves them stalled in third place in the North Division standings going into Friday night’s matchup at Rogers Place.
Flames vs Oilers | OddsShark Matchup Report
While the Oilers have been a disappointment in each of their past two road trips, they have been steady at both ends of the ice at Rogers Place during their current six-game home win streak. Edmonton shooters have regularly filled the net during the team’s current home surge, as the team has averaged over four goals per game during the 6-0-0 run. But with opponents managing to score just 10 total goals during that stretch, the Oilers have produced mixed results on the totals, with the UNDER going 3-2-1 over that stretch.
However, high scoring has regularly marked recent editions of the Battle of Alberta. These two teams have scored an average total of seven goals per game through their first six meetings of the season, with the OVER prevailing at sports betting sites on four of those occasions. The OVER has also regularly paid out when these teams clash in Edmonton, going 4-2-1 in seven matchups since the start of 2018.
Connor McDavid has powered the Edmonton offense in recent dates with Calgary, as the Oilers captain has racked up five goals and seven assists over his past four appearances against Calgary. Tyson Barrie hopes to build on his four-assist performance when these teams last met, but the Oilers rearguard has cooled off of late, going pointless in three of his past four outings.
While the Oilers aim to maintain their winning touch on home ice, the Flames arrive in Edmonton amid an air of desperation, and sporting +120 odds. Losers in six of their past eight games, the Flames hope to benefit from an unexpected pause in their schedule earlier this week after seeing Wednesday’s road date in Vancouver postponed due to COVID-19 concerns within the Canucks organization.
Now six points back of Montreal in the race for the final playoff spot in the North Division, the Calgary offense has fallen quiet during the team’s swoon, averaging just two goals per game, and has been limited to just two total goals during a three-game road losing streak.
