Well, it didn’t take long for two former Edmonton Oilers to get on the scoresheet.
The regular season kicked off in North America on Tuesday, with the St. Louis Blues visiting the Seattle Kraken. After two early goals in the second period for Seattle, the Blues fought back and scored three to take the lead heading into the third period.
One of which goals saw the two players the Blues acquired through offer sheets — Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway — link up for the game-tying second goal.
Holloway didn’t impact this play much. He picked up a loose puck after a puck battle and passed back to the point. After a defence-to-defence pass, Broberg beat the Kraken netminder, Philipp Grubauer, for his first as a Blue.
Broberg was selected eighth overall by the Oilers in the 2019 draft. The left-shot defenceman never became a regular for the contenders, only playing 81 regular season games in three seasons, with two goals and 13 points. His career-high in games and points came in 2022-23, where he played 46 games, scoring a goal and seven points while filling in as the seventh defenceman in Jay Woodcroft’s 11-7 lineup.
Despite the lack of regular season success, Broberg has played 20 playoff games in his previous three seasons in the league. The defenceman played nine games during the Oilers’ 2023 postseason run, but he made a name for himself during their 2024 run to the Stanley Cup Finals.
Coming into the lineup during the Western Conference Final, Broberg scored two goals and three points in 10 games as the Oilers fell just short of winning their sixth Stanley Cup.
As for Holloway, he was selected 14th overall by the Oilers in the 2020 draft. His first season in the National Hockey League was in 2022-23, scoring three goals and nine points in 51 games. In 2023-24, he scored six goals and nine points in 38 games as he missed time with an injury before spending 18 games in the American Hockey League.
Like Broberg, Holloway became an important depth piece for the Oilers in their 2024 postseason run, as he played along Leon Draisaitl on the second line. Overall, he finished with five goals and seven points in 25 games.
Both Broberg and Holloway were offer sheeted by the Blues on Aug. 13, with the Oilers declining to match both of their contracts. In return, the Oilers received a 2025 third-round pick for Holloway and a 2025 second-round pick for Broberg.
