The Spengler Cup is set to take place once again in Davos, Switzerland, and it’s bringing a bit of Oilers flair with it this year. Earlier today, it was announced via social media that Sam Gagner will captain the Canadian squad at the 2024 edition of the tournament. For Gagner, it’s a well-deserved nod to his incredible career and leadership both on and off the ice.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Spengler Cup, let’s get you up to speed. Held annually since 1923 — with some interruptions along the way— the Spengler Cup is the oldest invitational hockey tournament in the world. Hosted by HC Davos, it features a mix of club teams and national squads battling it out in one of hockey’s most picturesque settings. For Canadian hockey fans, it’s become a bit of a holiday tradition, with Canada sending teams made up of professionals playing in Europe, former NHLers, and prospects looking to make their mark.
Enter Sam Gagner, a player who’s spent the better part of 17 years carving out a career in the NHL. Over 1,043 games, Gagner has amassed 197 goals, 332 assists, and 529 points as a skilled player who’s bopped around the league more than a time or two. He’s had stops in Edmonton (3x), Arizona, Philadelphia, Columbus, Vancouver, Detroit, and Winnipeg along with a few AHL stops along the way. Most recently, Gagner found himself on a professional tryout with the Carolina Hurricanes before being released earlier this season. Despite being unsigned, Gagner’s commitment to the game hasn’t wavered, and now he’ll get the chance to don the Maple Leaf once again.
For Gagner, the Spengler Cup is more than just another tournament. It’s an opportunity to represent his country and prove he’s still got plenty left in the tank. Who knows, maybe there’s a team out there that sees him have a strong showing at the Spengler and it turns into a job down the line. Stranger things have happened. Known for his hockey IQ, slick hands, and veteran presence, he’ll undoubtedly be a key piece for Canada as they chase another Spengler Cup title.
This isn’t the first time Gagner has represented Canada on the international stage. Back in his junior days, he was part of the Canadian World Junior squad that won gold in 2007. At the time, Gagner was the youngest player on Team Canada, helping them win their third of five consecutive gold medals. Seventeen years later, he’s coming full circle, wearing the “C” for his country in one of international hockey’s most unique competitions.
While the NHL door might be temporarily closed, the Spengler Cup gives him a chance to showcase his talents, lead a team of Canadians hungry for victory, and remind everyone why he’s been such a respected figure in the hockey world for so long. And who knows, maybe a successful Spengler Cup opens up a door or two for Sam down the line. We’ll be cheering for him either way.
