I like the Senators. They’re good with me. Final Score: 6-2 Oilers
In the hours leading up to this hockey game, I found myself thinking about how the Oilers needed to do whatever it took to wrap up a sweep against the Senators. After Wednesday’s blowout win, I was wondering whether Ottawa was going to roll into the game with a chip on their shoulder, no doubt embarrassed by the ass kicking they took two nights ago. That’s not to say that I was majorly nervous about being embarrassed or anything, but I would certainly say that I was expecting a better effort. Yet, it was the Oilers that found the back of the net only 10 seconds into the hockey game, setting themselves up with the kind of start you can set your watch to. To their credit, the Senators were able to rebound within minutes, evening the game up and negating the early goal from McDavid that got the party started. The even ground wasn’t meant to be, though, as the Oilers restored their lead midway through the frame on a beautiful snipe from Tyson Barrie that he put in an unstoppable spot, and the Oilers went into the intermission with a lead in tow.
Moving through the first portion of the second period, there was very much a back-and-forth flow to the game with both sides getting their share of chances and shots, but it was the Senators that were able to capitalize on a mistake and tie the game for the second time. Unlike round two of this three-game set, I thought the Senators played with more attention to detail and showed a sense of resilience that kept them hanging around a little bit longer than they probably should have. Their shot at the redemption wouldn’t end well, though. Unfortunately for Sens fans, the Dynamic Duo was, once again, way too much to handle and truly looked like they were rocking some kind of Game Genie from the 90s that no one else has access to. Up by two goals with 20 minutes to play, the Oilers were exactly where they wanted to be and I didn’t think it was going to take much to close out the win apart from playing a simple game to limit their mistakes. And exactly as hoped, the boys were able to flex on a team they should beat, added some additional insurance to pad the stats, and rode out the clock to cash in a win like they’ve done it 1000 times.
The wrap.
THE BRIGHT SIDE

- @Connor McDavid opened the scoring only 10 seconds after the opening faceoff with a lucky goal from near the corner that caught Daccord by surprise. McDavid was charging towards the corner with speed when he threw the puck on net and had it take a friendly bounce that handcuffed the goaltender.
- @Tyson Barrie restored the Oilers’ lead (2-1) with a bullet of a wrister from the high slot that beat Daccord up over the blocker. Frankly, it was a perfect shot by Barrie and I don’t think
- For the second straight game, @Darnell Nurse found the back of the net with a perfectly placed wrister from the slot that was able to fool the goaltender. I don’t know what kind of magic Darryl pulled off in the offseason, but he seems to be scoring from everywhere this year and while I don’t know how long the ride will last, I’ll certainly enjoy it here at the moment.
- @Leon Draisaitl extended the lead to two goals with a powerplay marker from his office near the right side of the net after McDavid found him with a perfect pass to his wheelhouse. And as he usually does, Draisaitl fired the puck without hesitation which didn’t allow Daccord enough time to find his way across.
- @Tyler Ennis added the Oilers’ fifth goal of the night after the puck took a lucky bounce off of RNH’s skate right to his stick at the doorstep. After an initial chance, Ennis showed some really nice patience with the puck as he casually lifted it up and over a falling Daccord. Ennis finished the night with two points.
- You guys can’t complain about me pumping @Gaetan Haas’ tires after he goes out and scores an all-world dipsy dangle goal like that. When you’re lost — Mas Gaetan Haas!
- @Mike Smith was back in net and looking to continue his heater and, outside of the lucky bounce that beat him in the first period, the veteran netminder was rock solid once again. While he wasn’t as busy as his counterpart, Smith was called upon a handful of times to make a timely save and he answered the bell just as he has all season long. I especially liked the way he rushed the bench at the end of the game to chirp the Sens as things were getting testy. Smith finished the night with 23 saves and a .920 save%.
- I liked the Ennis-RNH-Puljujarvi line again and was happy to see them get rewarded with the third period goal by Ennis.
- With his assist tonight, Kailer Yamamoto now has four points (2G, 2A) in his last four games.
- Considering the Oilers had four powerplay chances and the Senators are terrible, it would have been nice to see them get more than the one goal they did score but I think we can all be happy that they were able to cash one in with the man advantage.
- The Oilers outshot the Senators by a 37-25 margin. Three cheers for the Corsi!
- You knew there would be a point in this Wrap Up about the Oilers winning 56% of the faceoffs and here it is.
THE FACE PALMERS

- Moments after McDavid opened the scoring, @Thomas Chabot scored an equally strange goal (1-1) after he charged into the Oilers’ zone with speed when his attempted centring pass took a lucky bounce into the net off of Tyson Barrie’s skate. As quickly as the Oilers gave themselves the lead, the Sens were able to respond.
- @Brady Tkachuk tied the game up for a second time (2-2) after Tim Stutzle set him up on the doorstep with a tap-in. To that point, the Oilers had been carrying the momentum but a costly mistake resulted in a second straight comeback goal by the Senators.
- The Oilers gave up one powerplay goal against on the two chances they faced which isn’t great but I’m not going to spend much time complaining about it.
- No Evan Bouchard again tonight. Le sigh.
