The Edmonton Oilers aren’t giving up the fight to finish with home ice advantage.
On Sunday evening, they headed to Winnipeg by bus to face off against the Jets, defeating the soon-to-be Presidents’ Trophy-winning team 4-1. Let’s take a look at what happened in this one!
A minute into the second period, Connor McDavid forced a turnover as the Jets tried to break out. After winning the puck, he found Connor Brown all alone in front of the net, and Brown made no mistake in putting the Oilers on the board.
Just over six minutes into the second period, the Jets had their answer on the power play. Stuart Skinner made the initial save on Mark Scheifele, but the rebound came out to Alex Iafallo, who put in the rebound.
With about seven minutes left in the second, the Oilers retook the lead as Adam Henrique batted the puck into the net as the Jets’ penalty ended. A Jet was down after blocking a shot while another Jet was without his stick.
The Oilers added an insurance goal with 7:35 left in the third period, as Derek Ryan forced a turnover in the neutral zone, found Corey Perry on the rush, and the 39-year-old made no mistake in scoring his 18th of the season.
Viktor Arvidsson iced the game with an empty net goal, the Oilers’ second in as many games. The Swede now have eight goals in his past 18 games.

Takeaways…

A long time ago, it took Connor Brown over 50 games to score his first goal of the season for the Oilers. Those memories are a distant past, as Brown has been nothing short of great in the Oilers’ past few games, scoring five goals in his last six games.
A big reason for that is because he’s been paired with Connor McDavid the past three games, where Brown has four goals. McDavid has been great since returning from injury, picking up nine assists in those three games, including two on Sunday. He’s now just one point shy of reaching 100 points for the eighth time in his 10-year career.
Corey Perry is having a fantastic season, scoring his 18th goal of the season while also picking up an assist on Adam Henrique’s 12th goal of the season. Perry now has 18 goals and 29 points in 79 games, which is a bit surprising given he’ll be 40 next month.
Cam Dineen made his second Oilers appearance, playing 14:09 of ice time, the least for any Oiler defenceman in this game. Still, it’s better than having just five defencemen for a third consecutive game.
Stuart Skinner returned for the first time since March 26, saving 17 of 18 shots for a .944 save percentage. The Jets didn’t have their full squad, but this is still a good sign nonetheless.
The Oilers still have a chance to finish with home-ice advantage. With the win, they move to 47-28-5 with 99 points, two back of the Los Angeles Kings with one more game played.
Monday’s game against the Kings is a big one, as if the Oilers lose that one, they’ll be locked into the third seed in the Pacific Division. If they win, they will equal the number of points on the Kings, although the Kings will have two games to the Oilers’ one game with the first tiebreaker (regulation wins). That game starts at 8:00 PM MT.
