Jack Roslovic wasn’t in Edmonton for a long time, but it was a good time, and now, he’s heading east.
He joined the Oilers amidst their first game of the season last year, inking a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the team. He chipped in solid depth offence for the team, scoring 21 goals and 36 points in 69 games, adding an assist in six playoff games.
Now, Roslovic, 29, has signed a two-year deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs carrying a $4 million cap hit. News of the signing was first reported by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, with the insider Chris Johnston first to report the terms.
Roslovic was an unrestricted free agent last summer, too, and was in search of a long-term deal, but nothing materialized. The Oilers reportedly offered Roslovic a multi-year contract last summer, but he declined, eventually firing his agent.
Drafted by the Winnipeg Jets 25th overall in the 2015 draft, he spent the first four years of his career there before being dealt to the Columbus Blue Jackets alongside Patrik Laine. He had brief stints with the New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes before signing with the Oilers. Across his 10-year career, he’s scored 123 goals and 296 points in 595 games, adding three goals and 18 points in 51 playoff games in Winnipeg, New York, Carolina, and Edmonton.
AFP Analytics projected Roslovic to sign a three-year deal carrying a $4.696 million cap hit, and it’s clear that whether it was that deal or the one he signed in Toronto, the deals were too rich for the Oilers’ blood. The team entered free agency with roughly $7.4 million in cap space, according to PuckPedia, and allocating over half of that to Roslovic just wasn’t viable.
While his scoring was solid for his role in the regular season, Roslovic struggled to capitalize on his chances in the playoffs, despite generating 1.19 individual expected goals.
