The Edmonton Oilers will be looking to avoid being shut out in three straight games for the first time in franchise history when they close out a three-game series with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday night as -105 home underdogs on the NHL odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
Edmonton followed up a 4-0 loss in Saturday’s series opener with a 3-0 defeat on Monday, and now sits eight points back of Toronto going into Wednesday night’s matchup at Rogers Place.
Maple Leafs vs Oilers | OddsShark Matchup Report
The back-to-back goalless performances mark a stunning setback for the Oilers, who had entered this series leading the NHL in goals scored. Edmonton had quickly emerged as a challenger to Toronto’s dominance in the North Division while posting wins in 11 of 13 outings prior to the Maple Leafs’ arrival in town. Now lagging in third place in the divisional standings, one point back of Winnipeg, the Oilers have dipped to a +450 wager at sports betting sites to win the North Division.
The Oilers averaged over four goals per game during their recent 11-2-0 run. However, that has not dampened a steady run for the UNDER in totals betting. With total goals topping 5.0 just five times, the UNDER has paid out in nine of Edmonton’s past 14 overall contests. That trend extends to recent home dates, with four of the team’s past six outings finishing UNDER.
Edmonton’s current power outage has coincided with an uncharacteristically shaky stretch for the team’s goaltending. Mike Smith saw his six-game win streak halted while allowing four goals on just 29 shots on Saturday. And Mikko Koskinen fared no better on Monday, surrendering three first-period goals on just 10 shots to quickly seal the club’s fate.
With Monday’s defeat the Oilers have now dropped four of six meetings with Toronto this season, including three of four on home ice. Overall, the team has earned the win in just five of 18 clashes with the Maple Leafs, and has been limited to just two goals per game while losing seven of eight at home.
Listed as -115 favorites, the Maple Leafs hit the ice on Wednesday night looking to extend their current road win streak to five games. Toronto now leads the NHL in both points and goals scored, but it has been the stellar defensive effort over the first two games of the series that has captured attention.
The team’s performance has been even more impressive considering recent injury woes that have sidelined center Auston Matthews and netminders Frederik Andersen and Jack Campbell. However, reports indicate that both Matthews and Andersen are close to returning.
