@Edmonton Oilers defenceman @Matt Benning has joined the team amid their road trip.
Benning has missed significant time this season after suffering a concussion Nov. 19 against the @San Jose Sharks.
Having been placed on the injured reserve, he joined the Oilers for a Dec. 1 game against the @Vancouver Canucks where he was once again concussed. Benning has yet to suit up since.
As reported by The Athletic’s Jonathan Willis last week, Benning had been skating on his own in Edmonton.
It’s encouraging to see Benning rejoin the team, and I hope the Oilers express an abundance of caution when it comes to having him get back into an NHL game.
Edmonton has four games between now and the start of the all-star break on Jan. 19. My hope would be Edmonton expresses that caution and keeps him out of the lineup until the Oilers and @Calgary Flames meet on Jan. 29.
Concussions can be very fickle and with Benning, 24, having suffered two in such a tight time frame, there has to be concern over his future health.
