Good morning, everyone, and a happy Monday to all of you. I’ve got a brand new mailbag ready to go after taking your questions and sending them to the crew for their take on whatever is on your mind. This week, we’re discussing the Connor McDavid’s 1,000 point milestone, defensive needs, Leon Draisaitl points predictions, and more. If you’ve got a question you’d like to ask, email it to me at baggedmilk@oilersnation.com or on Twitter at @jsbmbaggedmilk, and I’ll get to you as soon as I can.
1) Clay asks – Connor McDavid hit the 1,000 point mark this past week, and I want to know if everyone thinks this is his most impressive milestone or if anything else can even compare?
Jason Gregor:
Yes, because it is over his entire career and shows how great he has been year after year.
Tyler Yaremchuk:
I’ll say yes. Getting 1000 points and moving into the top 100 in all-time league scoring is very impressive on it’s own but for me it’s when you add in the fact that he’s the fourth fastest player in league history to do it that makes it his most impressive accomplishment. It’s even more impressive when you consider the era he’s doing it in.
Liam Horrobin:
Becoming the 4th fastest to ever achieve 1000 points is incredibly impressive. Hitting 2000 is the only personal milestone that passes it in my eyes.
Baggedmilk:
It’s hard to go against 1000 points in 659 games played because it’s the fourth fastest that has ever been done in NHL history. That one is very different, and I think we’re spoiled to watch McDavid do his thing so often that it’s almost easy to take his greatness for granted. Getting to 1000 points this quickly is something else.

2) Anna asks – McDavid milestones provide the perfect opportunity to feel nostalgic about our captain. Outside of this latest 1,000 point achievement, which is your own personal favourite Connor McDavid milestone and why?
Jason Gregor:
Scoring 153 points in 2023. We hadn’t seen a 150-point season since 1996, so it was great to see it again.
Tyler Yaremchuk:
If we’re just talking about individual milestones and not team ones, I’ll say the year he got 100 points in the 56-game season. We all thought it was insane at the start of the season to think he could do it. On a personal level it stands out because I was one of the few people in the building that season because only media and league/team staff were allowed in the rink. It’s cool to say I was there and to have the video of the horn blaring in an empty rink after he did it.
Liam Horrobin:
Mine is when McDavid scored his 50th goal of the season against Arizona. I was in the building that net right behind the net he scored it on. A moment I’ll never forget.
Baggedmilk:
Seeing him hit 50 and then 60 goals for me. McDavid was always pass-first kind of player so to see him fill the net the way he’s capable of doing was awesome. I love goals, and he scored some beauties.
Edmonton Oilers Travis Dermott

3) Marc asks – With the Oilers accruing cap space, presumably to acquire a right shot defenceman later in the season, how does that affect the current “placeholder” players?
Jason Gregor:
I’m not sold they will be acquiring a 2nd pair RD, as there aren’t many on the market and Brett Kulak has showed he can do it. They could focus on adding a really good LD instead to bolster the third pair. I don’t expect Stecher and Dermott to be regulars in the playoffs.
Tyler Yaremchuk:
It gives the coach less flexibility, as we’ve seen this week with the team having to go 11-7 on multiple nights. That’s really it though. Accruing the cap space is so valuable that I don’t even view this as much of a downside.
Liam Horrobin:
On the blue line, Troy Stecher becomes the full time 7th defenceman and Travis Dermott goes down to the AHL. Then you’ll have Kulak and Emberson, Ekholm and Bouchard, and then Nurse with the new guy.
Baggedmilk:
If everybody knows that they’re going to trade for a defenceman at some point, I hope the bi-product is a little bit of urgency amongst the players whose job could be at risk.

4) Andrew asks – As of Friday, Leon Draisaitl needs 128 points to reach 1000 career points. How close does he get this season? (Oil have 65 games left when the question is submitted)
Jason Gregor:
I think he will score 100 and finish season with 122 points which will leave him 28 points shy of 1,000.
Tyler Yaremchuk:
I’ll say he gets another 100 points and needs 28 at the start of next season.
Liam Horrobin:
I’ll say he finishes this season with 120-ish points so he’ll need less than 30 to get there next season. It could be this time next year that we celebrate him hitting it.
Baggedmilk:
He’ll need 25 points next season that he’ll clean up before Christmas.
Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul fight Netflix

5) Brandon asks – Did everyone else fall for the hype and waste their Friday night watching the Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul fight or was it just me?
Jason Gregor:
I didn’t watch it. No reason to. Paul is a great promoter, but not a boxer worth watching and Tyson was 58 years old. From the highlights it looked like Tyson didn’t really try to punch his hardest. It is a sad state that Paul made $40m on the fight, despite not being remotely close to a good pro boxer. He won’t fight a real boxer, because he’d lose and he knows it.
Tyler Yaremchuk:
I did and it was apparent from watching them walk in that this was not going to be a close fight. I think Paul even took it easy on him.
Liam Horrobin:
I had it on the iPad while making pizza dough. It was sad to watch and I think Jake Paul realized in the 3rd or 4th round what was happening.
Baggedmilk:
Yep, sure did. It was awful. Mike Tyson could barely move in the ring and the crowd even started booing at moments. Toss in the Netflix streaming issues a lot of folks were having and the whole thing was a mess. Thank Gord for the undercard, which had two pretty solid fights in there.
