Two players at the Canadian National World Junior Team camp have tested positive for COVID-19.
The pair have been placed into quarantine at the team hotel in Red Deer.
“Upon learning of the positive test this morning, the decision was made to postpone the Red-White game scheduled for this morning,” Team Canada said in a statement.
“As per Hockey Canada’s safety protocols, all players, coaches and staff members took mandatory COVID-19 tests upon arrival at camp and have continued to be tested regularly throughout the past ten days. For precautionary reasons, we will also ensure that all players and team personnel go through an additional test before resuming camp activities.”
First cuts from the group of 46 were expected to come on Tuesday, but no word on if that is being impacted. Head coach Andre Tourigny said he wanted to drop to roster to 30-34 players following what was going to be Tuesday’s game.
As noted by TSN’s Bob McKenzie, the challenge for the World Junior teams remains getting into the bubble.
You may recall in the month before NHL teams reported to the TOR and EDM bubbles, there were multiple teams with multiple positive tests, including TB, which went on to win the Stanley Cup. That said, these positive tests for CAN in Red Deer are obviously not optimal.
