It was on this day in 1983 that @Edmonton Oilers legend, Wayne Gretzky, set an NHL record for the most points in a single playoff game with seven.

In game three of the 1983 Smythe Division Finals, the Oilers absolutely lit up the @Calgary Flames by a score of 10-2 with Wayne Gretzky leading the charge with a massive seven-point showing. With four goals and three assists on the evening, Gretzky put on a show that the Flames were simply unable to handle, breaking the NHL single-game playoff record set by Darryl Sittler in 1976. The Oilers would go on to win the series 4-1.

Gretzky’s playoff record from ’83 stood for the next five seasons before Patrik Sundstrom put up eight points for the New Jersey Devils in 1988 showdown with the Washington Capitals. A year later, Mario Lemieux was able to match the record with eight points of his own against the Philadelphia Flyers. As of this writing, Lemieux and Sundstrom remain atop of the single-game playoff leaderboard and it seems unlikely that this NHL record will be touched any time soon.
