The St. Louis Blues have locked up Philip Broberg.
On Saturday afternoon, The Athletic’s Jeremy Rutherford reported that Broberg and the St. Louis Blues have agreed on a six-year extension worth $8 million annually.
Through 45 games this season, the left-shot defenceman has scored two goals and 14 points in 45 games, on pace for three goals and 25 points. That’d be down from his eight goals and 29 points in 68 games in 2024-25.
Broberg, who was named to Sweden’s Olympic roster, has emerged as a strong defensive defenceman, as the Blues have 51.47 percent of the goal share when he’s on the ice during five-on-five. They have a similar expected goal share during five-on-five action with Broberg on the ice.
Drafted eighth overall in the 2019 draft by the Edmonton Oilers, Broberg got a few looks in the league in 2021-22, 2022-23, and 2023-24, but never got a fair shake. After scoring twice in 10 postseason games in 2024, the Blues gave him and Dylan Holloway an offer sheet, with both players accepting and the Oilers declining to match.
He’ll be a big piece of the Blues defence core moving forward, as they currently have a 17-20-8 record with 42 points, five points out of a playoff spot.
Hurricanes open to trading Jesperi Kotkaniemi
Before Holloway and Broberg, the most recent player to move teams thanks to an offer sheet was Jesperi Kotkaniemi, going from the Montréal Canadiens to the Carolina Hurricanes. Well, it looks as if the Finnish centre’s time in Raleigh could be coming to an end.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the Hurricanes are considering offers regarding the 25-year-old, as they believe a change of scenery will do him some good. Originally drafted by the Canadiens third overall in the 2018 draft, the Pori, Finland native scored 11 goals and 34 points in 79 games during his rookie campaign in 2018-19.
Kotkaniemi didn’t reach those heights again with the Canadiens, regressing in 2019-20, but having a strong 2020-21 season. Over 56 games, he scored five goals and 20 points, with five goals and eight points in 19 playoff games. Entering the 2021 off-season as a restricted free agent, Kotkaniemi was offered a one-year deal worth a little over $6.1 million, with the Canadiens declining to accept.
In his first season as a Hurricane, Kotkaniemi scored 12 goals and 29 points, setting a career-high in goals that season. In 2022-23, Kotkaniemi scored a career-best 18 goals and 43 points, with three goals and seven points in 15 postseason games. He was able to pot back-to-back 12 goal seasons in 2023-24 and 2024-25, putting up 33 points last season.
However, Kotkaniemi has just two goals and six points through 25 games in 2025-26. Kotkaniemi is in the fourth year of an eight-year deal worth $4.82 million annually.
Dougie Hamilton flexible on a trade
Another player who could be traded ahead of March 6’s trade deadline is Dougie Hamilton. His agent, J.P. Barry told The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun that the right-shot defenceman was flexible on a trade, as he’s willing to be traded to a team not on his 10-team trade list.
According to his agent, the Devils have tried to shop Hamilton since the 2025 draft. With the return of Johnathan Kovacevic, Hamilton won’t be in the Devils’ lineup, which Barry believes is a calculated move on the part of the Devils. It’s unclear which of the 21 teams aren’t on Hamilton’s trade list.
Born in Toronto, Ontario, Hamilton was drafted ninth overall in the 2011 draft. He posted a career-best year in 2014-15, scoring 10 goals and 42 points in 72 games. His career took off once he was traded to the Calgary Flames, as he scored 13 goals and 50 points in his first season in Alberta, spending three seasons with the Flames.
He was traded alongside Adam Fox to the Hurricanes in the 2018 off-season, spending three seasons in Raleigh. When he became a free agent after the 2020-21 season, Hamilton signed a seven-year deal with an annual cap hit of $9 million with the Devils. In 2022-23, he scored a career-best 22 goals and 52 points in 82 games, but has yet to reach the double-digit goal mark since, playing 20 games in 2023-24 and 64 in 2024-25.
Through 40 games this season, Hamilton has five goals and 10 points, well below the 40 points he had in 2024-25.
