The Calgary Flames have placed veteran defenceman Tyson Barrie on waivers Thursday.
The news was first announced early in the day by Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli.
Barrie, 33, has drawn in for 13 games with the Flames this year after attending training camp on a professional tryout, signing a one-year, $1.25-million deal, scoring a goal and three points. With him on the ice at five-on-five, the Flames had been outscored 8-4.
His most successful time in his 822 game career came with the Edmonton Oilers, playing 190 games across parts of three seasons, scoring 25 goals and 132 points. His per-game assist and point rates then were the highest of his tenure with any of the Colorado Avalanche, Toronto Maple Leafs, Nashville Predators or the Flames.
Drafted by the Avalanche in the third round of the 2009 draft, Barrie got his first taste of NHL action by playing 10 games in 2011-12, and another 32 games in the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season, scoring two goals and 13 points. He would break out the following year, scoring 13 goals and 38 points in 64 games, building on those totals and becoming a premier offensive defenceman in the league.
After a single season in Toronto in 2019-20, Barrie signed a one-year, $3.75-million deal with the Oilers, extending after the season with a three-year, $4.5-million AAV deal. He was a great offensive defenceman for the Oilers, helping usher in one of the league’s most successful power play’s of all-time.
In the second year of his extension, the Oilers traded him, along with prospect Reid Schaefer, a first-round pick in 2024 and a fourth-round pick in 2024 to the Predators in exchange for Mattias Ekholm.

Blackhawks’ Jones open to trade

Another big name could be on the move ahead of March 7th’s trade deadline, as Chicago Blackhawks defenceman Seth Jones has expressed a desire to be traded.
The blue liner opened up to the Chicago Sun-Times’ Ben Hope, telling him he wants a chance to win.
“I would like to give myself a chance to win in my career,” Jones said. “I know that the money is not an easy thing to move, and that’s what we’re figuring out.
“If it happens, it happens. Obviously, while I’m here with the Blackhawks, they have my full effort [and] full attention to this team to try to get this team better … You have fun coming to the rink every day. That’s what my goal is for this team, as long as I’m here. It could be two weeks. It could be five more years.”
Jones and Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson have reportedly had a back-and-forth about a potential trade of the blue liner.
The 30-year-old is in the third year of an eight-year, $9.5-million AAV contract. Jones landed on Daily Faceoff’s latest Trade Targets list in the eighth spot, where Frank Seravalli wrote about a potential move.
Do the massive salary cap increases agreed upon between the NHL and NHLPA make it easier for the Hawks to move Jones? Maybe. At $9.5 million, Jones will count for just 8 percent of the cap three seasons from now. Yes, he will be 33 then, but he is such a gifted and effortless skater there shouldn’t be any concern on the age curve chart. Jones has averaged 25:18 over four seasons in Chicago. He is a fine defenseman, just an overpaid one, and the Blackhawks are willing to be creative to move a player who doesn’t necessarily line up with their timeline. Sounds like talks are picking up on that front.
