One of few public NHL salary cap resource sites CapFriendly has been purchased by the Washington Capitals, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.
The reported transaction will see the website remain in the public sphere until around July 5th, meaning it will remain operational through the remainder of the playoffs, the NHL draft, and the start of free agency.
“NHL teams that had agreements to use their tools/Application Programming Interface (API) recently received notice that these contracts would be terminated,” Friedman reported. “This led to speculation that one club was buying the site, and all information pointed to the Capitals.”
The website was launched in 2015 as a predecessor to CapGeek, which was run by the late Matthew Wuest. Wuest died in March 2015 after a battle with colon cancer.
CapFriendly wasn’t just a resource used by fans, but by teams and stakeholders all across the NHL.
Now, just one public salary cap resource site remains in PuckPedia.
Who will land Martin Necas?
The rumour mill is churning ahead of the NHL offseason, and Carolina Hurricanes winger Martin Necas is at the front and centre of trade talks.
The 25-year-old is a pending restricted free agent coming off a 77-game, 24-goal, 53-point season, and is looking for a pay increase from his previous $3-million contract, something the Hurricanes appear reluctant to give.
On Monday’s edition of Daily Faceoff Live from Sunrise, Florida, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk talked about the latest news regarding the winger.
Tyler Yaremchuk: What are some of the sticking points in a potential Martin Necas trade?Frank Seravalli: I don’t know that there are any. I think the ‘Canes are just trying to get the best deal that they can possible. I think everyone probably has a pretty clear idea of what the next Marty Necas contract looks like, if it’s not exactly 7x$7.5(million), it’s probably pretty close. Maybe the ‘Canes can help you out and do the old sign, then trade to get the eighth year, but either way, I don’t view the contract as being incredibly problematic. Necas is a guy, 25 years old and already has a 71-point season under his belt. So, I think it’s just about finding the right blend for the Hurricanes between roster pieces and between draft picks. Which one do you lean more towards, if you take the draft picks can you package them to get something else and then of course, the Jake Guentzel question about you know, trying to get something back in return for his signing rights.
