Noah Philp’s return to hockey is official.
The Edmonton Oilers announced Monday that Philp signed a one-year contract with an AAV of $775,000.
Philp, 25, signed with the Oilers in April 2022 out of the University of Alberta Golden Bears and joined the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors for six games — three regular season games and three playoff games  — notching one assist in the playoffs.
He spent the whole 2022-23 season with the Condors, scoring 19 goals and 37 points in 70 games. It was a slow start to the season for him, but his game came around in the back half of the season.
After that season, however, Philp retired from the game, citing personal reasons, but the Oilers retained his rights so he could remain on their reserve list. That move has paid off for the team, as now, three months after news broke that Philp would return, he’s signed a new deal with the Oilers.
Oilersnation prospect writer Bruce Curlock wrote in a review of Philp’s 2022-23 season that he felt the player was a legitimate NHL prospect:
He’s not a top six player and likely wouldn’t fit most top nines. However, Noah Philp can play a 4th line role in the NHL. He’s a right-shot center with great size and hockey sense. He can score enough to ensure that his line will not be underwater on goal share. These are the players that the Oilers will need for years to come given the salary cap challenges of trying to keep McDavid and Draisaitl together.
Philp will provide solid depth for the organization and could be a player who makes his NHL debut at some point this year. But given that he had a year off from playing professional hockey, it’s reasonable to assume there will be a bit of an adjustment period for him getting back in game action.
