Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid has been named the NHL’s first star of the week after he became the fourth-fastest and fourth-youngest player to hit the 1,000-point mark in his career.
McDavid drew in for three games last week, scoring three goals and eight points, helping the Oilers go 2-0-1.
His first game of the week saw him score a goal and four points against the New York Islanders on November 12th, including helping set up Leon Draisaitl for the game-winning goal in overtime.
Two nights later against the Nashville Predators, he scored his 1,000th point, a goal, on a cross-ice pass from Draisaitl. He would add an apple later that game, with another primary overtime assist, setting up Darnell Nurse for the overtime winner.
On Saturday night, McDavid scored another goal and an assist, scoring on the power play in the second period and getting an assist on Draisaitl’s game-tying goal against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
McDavid’s continued to be the most dominant player in the league, with his 1.52 career points per game ranking third in NHL history among players with over 100 games played, behind only Wayne Gretzky (1.92) and Mario Lemieux (1.88). On the season, he’s now totalled seven goals and 21 points in 15 games this year.
The second star of the week went to Dallas Stars forward Mason Marchment, one of the hottest players in the league right now, after putting up four goals and eight points in three games. His biggest performance game in his first game of the week, scoring a goal and five points against the Pittsburgh Penguins. His goal and three of those assists came in the first period, tying the Stars franchise record.
Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy was named the third star of the week, after becoming the fastest goaltender in NHL history to reach the 300-win mark, doing so in his 490th game played. He went 2-0-0 last week, posting a 0.50 goals against average and a .891 save percentage, getting a shutout against the New Jersey Devils, turning aside 29 shots, and saving 23 of 24 faced in a win against the Winnipeg Jets.
