The Edmonton Oilers have made Monday’s news official, placing Evander Kane on the Long-Term Injured Reserve and assigning Matthew Savoie and Cameron Wright to the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors.
Kane lands on the LTIR after undergoing offseason surgery in which he had two sports hernias and four muscle tears repaired in his abdomen. The Oilers will open up his $5.125-million dollar cap hit as part of the LTIR pool, allowing the team to surpass the NHL’s salary cap by that amount minus $53, as that’s how much cap space the team now has.
It’s all a part of the impressive salary cap navigation by the Oilers, as with Kane on the LTIR and with the team under the salary cap at the time he’s placed there, they will still be able to accrue salary cap space ahead of the NHL’s March 7th trade deadline. That means the Oilers could free up to roughly $4.5-million in cap space before the deadline, as well as having the ability to surpass the salary cap by the aforementioned amount.
A part of the Oilers’ salary cap navigation was signing Wright to a one-year contract Monday, and recalling Savoie from the Condors, only for them both to be assigned to Bakersfield.
Kane, meanwhile, had appeared in 77 regular season games for the Oilers last season, scoring 24 goals and 44 points. He also drew in for 20 playoff games, scoring four goals and as many assists, but missed most of the Stanley Cup Finals due to his injuries.
The team made another move on Tuesday, signing defenceman Travis Dermott to a one-year, two-way $775,000 contract after a strong pre-season. He’ll operate as the team’s seventh defenceman.
Edmonton’s season-opener is set for Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m. MST, when they host the Winnipeg Jets.
