An Edmonton Oilers prospect is on the move, as Dalyn Wakely will be changing a North Bay Batallion jersey for a Barrie Colts one.
The deal, announced Thursday morning, will see Wakely head to the Colts in exchange for right winger Shamar Moses, a first-round pick in the 2023 OHL draft, as well as a fourth-round pick in 2025, and a fifth in 2027.
Wakely, 20, was selected by the Oilers in the sixth round of the 2024 draft, and will go from a team in rebuild mode, Oilersnation’s own Bruce Curlock highlighted, to a team with another Oilers prospect in defenceman in Beau Akey. Wakely racked up 39 goals and 104 points in 66 games last year, and will look to build on those numbers this season. He hadn’t appeared in any of the Battalion’s five games this year.
In a statement, Colts head coach and general manager Marty Williamson said this is a move which will make their team better this year.
“Dalyn is someone we have admired for multiple seasons being on the opposite side,” he said. “We have seen him a lot throughout our matchups against North Bay and he has worked his way into being one of the most complete players in our league.
“Adding someone with such a high skillset and character to our group will be a big piece in building towards our goals. Having him on our side is something we’re really looking forward to and our fans should be excited about.”
Wakley came in as Oilersnation’s 14th ranked prospect, with Bruce Curlock calling him a very responsible, high-motor player who never takes a shift off.
“If Wakely can prove that last season was a breakout and not an anomaly, the Oilers will have themselves a very good, very greasy right-shot center prospect,” he added.
