The Edmonton Oilers will give their captain, Connor McDavid, some well-deserved credit for hitting the 1,000-point mark in December.
When the Columbus Blue Jackets come to town on December 5th, the Oilers will honour him in a ceremony, presenting him with a “golden stick and commemorative Tiffany crystal for his accomplishment,” the Oilers said Tuesday, with a special tribute video happening, too.
That won’t be all he receives, however, as McDavid’s teammates will present him with a gift.
McDavid scored his 1,000th point on November 14th against the Nashville Predators, cashing in on a two-on-one, cross-ice pass from his hockey better half, Leon Draisaitl, as the Oilers went on to win 3-2 in overtime.
He became the fourth-fastest, and fourth-youngest player — at 27 years and 306 days old — in NHL history to hit the mark, trailing just Wayne Gretzky (424 games), Mario Lemieux (513) and Mike Bossy (656).
“Some of these things have hit me a little more emotionally than I would’ve thought,” said McDavid after that game against the Predators. “You spend your whole life playing hockey and loving the game, and just wanting to play and make the NHL.
“1,000 points later, I’ve been doing it for 10 years now, and it’s pretty special. You take it for granted sometimes, and as I said, these moments give you a chance to look back and be grateful.”
His 1,000th point came 3,320 days after he scored his first point, tipping home an Andrej Sekera point shot on October 13th, 2015, against then-Dallas Stars goaltender Kari Lehtonen.
McDavid’s incoming gift from his teammates isn’t the only thing they’ve done for him, making a hilarious shirt — head manned by Draisaitl and Oilers equipment manager Brad Harrison — as well as a big cake presented after the game.
