The Edmonton Oilers will return to the ice for the first time since last weekend when they open a two-game series with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday as +135 road underdogs on the NHL odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
Edmonton will be hoping that this week’s unexpected break in the schedule hasn’t dampened the momentum that has lifted the club to three straight wins ahead of Saturday night’s matchup at Scotiabank Arena.
Oilers vs Maple Leafs | OddsShark Matchup Report
The Oilers were scheduled to open a five-game road trip in Montreal earlier this week, but saw their three-game series with the Canadiens postponed over fears of a potential COVID-19 outbreak. The break came at a good time for the team, which had played six games over the previous nine nights including a trio of road contests. And while the Oilers’ current 3-0-0 run has enabled them to keep pace with the division-leading Maple Leafs, they have also seen their recent dominance on the road come to an end with two defeats in their past three away dates.
Most importantly, Edmonton fans will be eager to see how the Oilers respond in their first clash with Toronto since being recently outclassed in three straight home losses to the Maple Leafs. Edmonton was outscored by a wide 13-1 margin while being swept. However, the team has rebounded well from that debacle, particularly on defense, allowing just 2.11 goals per game while going 7-2-0 in nine subsequent contests.
In addition to eliminating the 10-point lead that the Maple Leafs had amassed with their three-game sweep, the Oilers have also closed the gap on Toronto on the divisional odds, where they now join the surging Winnipeg Jets as +400 co-second favorites at betting sites. However, they still face a challenge to reverse a steady losing track record against the Maple Leafs. The Oilers have scored just 13 total goals while dropping five of seven to the Maple Leafs this season, and have been limited to two or fewer goals on six occasions while losing in eight of their past 10 visits to Toronto.
The Maple Leafs aim to win three in a row for the first time since their last visit to Edmonton as they enter Saturday night’s series opener as -155 home favorites. While the Oilers immediately bounced back from their recent beatings by Toronto, the Maple Leafs were unable to maintain their torrid pace. Hobbled by injuries and the worrisome play of netminder Frederik Andersen, Toronto lost six of its next seven contests. But with Jack Campbell taking over goaltending duties, the Maple Leafs have now won two straight while surrendering just two total goals.
