We’re over three weeks into the season and the standings are wide open for almost any team.
The Vegas Golden Knights are off to a terrific start, while the other six Pacific Division teams not named the San Jose Sharks are within three points of one another. Let’s take a look at how the opposition is doing so far this season.
Vegas Golden Knights
So far this season, the Vegas Golden Knights have a 7-3-1 record, leading the Pacific Division with 15 points. It’s a tale of home and away from the 2023 Stanley Cup champions, as they have a perfect 7-0-0 home record, but have been held winless on the road as they have a 0-3-1 record.
You have to imagine that once they start playing more road games, their record will normalize a bit. Captain Mark Stone is tied for the league lead in points with 19, while Jack Eichel isn’t far behind with 16 points. Ivan Barbashev is tied for seventh in goals with seven. As for their goaltending, Adin Hill hasn’t been great, as he has an .878 save percentage and a 3.20 goals-against average in six games, but picked up a shutout on Monday.
Los Angeles Kings
It has been the total opposite for the Los Angeles Kings. They started their first seven games on the road, before a quick two-game home stand before another night in a hotel. On the road, they are 3-3-2, while being 3-0-0 at home. So far this season, they are 6-3-2 with 14 points in 11 games.
The Kings’ point leader is captain Anže Kopitar, who has four goals and 12 points in 11 games thanks to a big performance on Wednesday. Alex Laferriere leads the team in goals with six (and nine points), while Brandt Clarke has 11 points and Adrian Kempe has 10. Kevin Fiala has five goals, while former Oiler Warren Foegele has four goals.
Between the pipes looks like an issue for the Kings, as Darcy Kuemper has an .895 save percentage and a 3.16 goals-against average, while David Rittich has an .870 save percentage and a 3.09 goals-against average in six games.
Vancouver Canucks
This season, the Vancouver Canucks have only two regulation losses through nine games, picking up three overtime losses as well. This gives them a 4-2-3 record for 11 points, positioning them third in the Pacific Division. They’ve been a better road team this season with a 3-1-0 record compared to a 1-1-3 record at home.
Although he’s been streaky, Brock Boeser leads the team with four goals and is tied for the team lead with nine points. J.T. Miller also has nine points with four goals, while reigning Norris Trophy winner Quinn Hughes has two goals and eight points. The Canucks have six other players with two or more goals, not including Elias Pettersson.
Kevin Lankinen has filled in well for Thatcher Demko, who is still out for a few more weeks. This season, the Finnish netminder has a .920 save percentage and a 2.29 goals-against average in six games with a 4-0-2 record. Artūrs Šilovs hasn’t shown the same promise he showed in the second round, as he has a .797 save percentage and a 5.00 goals-against average in three games.
Calgary Flames
The Calgary Flames started the season off well, going 5-0-1 through their first six games. However, they’re on a four-game skid, losing to the Winnipeg Jets and Carolina Hurricanes in competitive games, before being utterly dominated in a 5-0 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday. On Wednesday, they lost 5-1 to the Utah Hockey Club.
Rasmus Andersson has been by far the Flames best player, as the right-shot defenceman has four goals and 10 points, tied for the team lead in goals and leading in points. Jonathan Huberdeau and Nazem Kadri each have four goals, while defenceman MacKenzie Weegar has three goals.
Young netminder Dustin Wolf is off to a solid start to his season, as he has a .907 save percentage and a 3.19 goals-against average in five games. Daniel Vladař hasn’t been as good, as he has an .895 save percentage and a 3.18 goals-against average in five games.
Seattle Kraken
The Seattle Kraken have been solid this season as well, as they have a 5-4-1 record through their first 10 games with 11 points. Like the Canucks, the Kraken have a 3-1-0 record on the road but are 2-3-1 in Seattle.
Jared McCann has easily been the Kraken’s best player, scoring five goals and 14 points to lead the team in the latter category. Former Oiler Jordan Eberle leads the team with six goals and nine points, while right-shot defenceman Brandon Montour has four goals and nine points. Fellow 2024 signee, Chandler Stephenson, has a goal and eight points in 10 games.
Joey Daccord has been the Kraken’s best goalie, as he has a .914 save percentage and a 2.80 goals-against average in six games played, with a 4-1-1 record. Philipp Grubauer has an .881 save percentage and a 3.10 goals-against average in four games.
Anaheim Ducks
The rebuilding Anaheim Ducks have a 4-4-1 record so far this season, picking up a 2-1-0 record at home and a 2-3-1 record away.
Lukáš Dostál looks like one of the best up-and-coming netminders in the National Hockey League. In seven games this season, the Czech native has a .943 save percentage and a 2 goals-against average for a 4-2-1 record.
Offensively, Troy Terry leads the way with five goals and eight points in nine games. Sophomore Leo Carlsson has four goals and six points, while former Oiler Ryan Strome has three goals and five points in nine games.
Edmonton Oilers
We all know the story, the Edmonton Oilers started the season in a rough way, as they are 4-5-1 over their first 10 games. Now, they’ve been better over their seven games, as they have a 4-2-1 record, but the loss of Connor McDavid for a few weeks isn’t great.
Speaking of McDavid, he’s tied for the team lead in points with 10, while Leon Draisaitl has six goals and 10 points. Defenceman Mattias Ekholm has two goals and eight points, while his partner Evan Bouchard has three goals and six points.
Goaltending has been a big concern for the Oilers this season. Stuart Skinner has started the majority of the games and has an .872 sav percentage and a 3.51 goals-against average. Calvin Pickard hasn’t been much better, as the backup has an .875 save percentage and a 2.91 goals-against average in four games played.
San Jose Sharks
Is it any surprise that the San Jose Sharks aren’t good again? This season, they started the year off with a nine-game losing streak, but have won their last two games to bring their record to 2-7-2, the worst in the league.
Mikael Granlund has been terrific this season for the Sharks, as he has five goals and 13 points in 11 games. Tyler Toffoli has 10 points and is tied for the team lead in goals with six, with Fabian Zetterlund having the same number. Defenceman Jake Walman has one goal and eight points in 11 games.
The Sharks currently rock a 1A/1B tandem split between Mackenzie Blackwood and Vítek Vaněček. Starting with Blackwood, he has an .888 save percentage and a 3.89 goals-against average in six games played, while Vaněček has an .879 save percentage and 3.65 goals-against average in six games played.
