Edmonton Oilers prospect defenceman Philip Broberg players through the World Juniors with an injury, Swedish head coach Joel Ronnmark said.
“He played through pain,” described the bench boss of his captain that scored three assists in four games.
Sweden fell to Finland Saturday afternoon eliminating them from contention in the World Juniors. Broberg notched all three of those assists in Sweden’s 7-1 rout over the Czech Republic in the tournament opener.
Broberg missed a game last Monday against Austria due to the injury, and clearly wasn’t the same player in Friday’s OT loss to Russia, or their 4-0 loss Saturday.
Fighting through injury, Broberg still clocked over 20 minutes per night.
The defenceman will not be attending Edmonton Oilers training camp that kicks off this afternoon and instead head back to Sweden to finish his season with Skelleftea of the SHL. He will return to North American with either the Oilers, or the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors following the SHL season.
This was Broberg’s third and final World Juniors. In 15 total games, he scored one goal and four assists.
