Of all the guys. That’s what a Columbus Blue Jackets fan must’ve been thinking in overtime on Monday night.
Connor McDavid goes supernova in the 3rd period to lead the comeback, but it’s Jack Roslovic, who played 228 games as a Jacket, who ended the game on a silky OT breakaway move on Monday night.
That extended the CBJ losing streak to four games, made worse by the wild ricochet goal Jake Walman scored to tie it shorthanded.
“It’s a tough one when you put in that many good minutes. It’s a crazy bounce at the end that they get a tying goal with. Like I said, I thought we were in complete control of the game, right from the start. Tough to swallow when that happens. It’s just the way things are going right now,” Boone Jenner said after the game.“We caught some real bad breaks…do we make some mistakes, yeah. But the way that we played is a step in the right direction. Are we bitter that we didn’t get the win? Yes, but we have to be able to learn from it.” – head coach Dean Evason.
Well, that losing streak is no more, as the Jackets found a way to jam a victory in Seattle, in a largely low-event game on Tuesday. Jet Greaves played both as it turned. Could it be Elvis Merzlikins starting in the Oilers’ heartbreak hotel?…
Deployment
Dean Evason made some surprising decisions against the Oilers — at least to me, a non-Jackets follower. First of all, Mathieu Olivier, who sat in the box for a five-minute major, still played more minutes than Yegor Chinakov and Kent Johnson. He was also out at the end-of-game power play, where the Jackets fumbling around with the puck eventually cost them.
Then, in overtime, after starting with Marchenko, Monahan, and Werenski, Evason puts Charlie Coyle on the ice, who has the chance on Skinner that was turned aside and led to the game-winner. Seemed like a good spot for Adam Fantilli.
The blueprint for the Jackets has to be cut and paste of the 2nd period, where they had nine High Danger Chances For to the Oilers zero at 5-on-5, according to NaturalStatTrick.
In many ways, Columbus deserved a better fate on Monday. MoneyPuck crunches numbers to create the Deserve to Win O’Meter, and CBJ was 66.6 per cent after 1000 simulations. It’s an inexact science, so take it for what it’s worth, but that feels about right. The Oilers got the bounc,e and they got the McDavid required.
Denton Mateychuk was beaten like a rented mule by the Connor McDavid spinarama. I’m sure he’s still thinking about it.
Notes:
- There aren’t many times you’ll play the same team in just three days in the regular season. More fireworks? Trent Frederic deserves a ton of credit for stepping up to take on Olivier. Any spillover?
- The Jackets are now 8-7 in the tight Eastern Conference. Points are at a premium.
- Columbus’ power play found a way to bury in Seattle, but it still sits at 15%. The PK is at 72.7%. These are near the bottom specialty teams.
- Reports suggest CBJ had been fighting a flu bug as the Western road trip concluded. Will they have more jump?
- It’s Hockey Fights Cancer night in Columbus tonight.
- Zach Werenski played a season-high 31:13 TOI vs Seattle.
- The Oilers are on a four-game losing streak in Columbus, dating back to 2019. They are 3-8 in Columbus since 2013.
